In the 2024-2025 school year, Hanoi Amsterdam High School for the Gifted will stop enrolling in grade 6. This is information from a document from the Ministry of Education and Training responding to questions from the Hanoi Department of Education and Training about enrolling in grade 6 in specialized schools.

The reason Hanoi Amsterdam High School for the Gifted is not allowed to enroll 6th graders is because according to regulations, specialized schools are not allowed to have a secondary school system and a non-specialized system.

From the above information, parents whose children are about to enter grade 6 in the 2024-2025 school year in Ho Chi Minh City are very worried.

"If Tran Dai Nghia High School for the Gifted in Ho Chi Minh City in particular and specialized schools across the country in general are not allowed to enroll 6th graders, this will be a step backward for the education sector. Specialized schools are training very well for the secondary school system.

Students who pass the entrance exam to grade 6 at specialized schools also develop very well during their 4 years of secondary school at specialized schools. So why does the ministry's regulation go against reality?" - Ms. Nguyen Vu Thu Huong, a parent of 2 children, one is studying grade 9 at Tran Dai Nghia School, the other is preparing to enter grade 6, gave her opinion.

On the morning of March 6, speaking with Tuoi Tre Online , an official from the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training said: "From the evening of March 5 until now, I have received many calls from parents about whether Tran Dai Nghia School is enrolling 6th graders or not. The department cannot say anything at this time. When we have official information, we will announce it."

It is known that Tran Dai Nghia High School for the Gifted was established in 2000 - a "late bloomer" compared to other specialized high schools in Ho Chi Minh City.

The school currently has more than 3,000 students at the junior high and high school levels. In addition to the high school level, which is recruited and educated like other specialized high schools, Tran Dai Nghia School has made a strong mark in educating students at the junior high level. Especially its strengths are in scientific research, foreign languages, nurturing excellent students and comprehensive educational activities.

Therefore, this is also the "hottest" public school in Ho Chi Minh City at the secondary level. Every year, the school recruits 6th grade students by taking a test according to the questions of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training.

The "competition" ratio to enter grade 6 is usually at 1 "competition" of 7 to 1 "competition" of 9. In 2023, there were 4,800 candidates registered to enter grade 6 at Tran Dai Nghia School while the enrollment quota was 535 students.

Why are specialized high schools not allowed to enroll 6th graders?

In 2023, the Ministry of Education and Training issued Circular No. 05/2023/TT-BGDDT dated February 28, 2023 promulgating regulations on the organization and operation of specialized high schools. Accordingly, specialized high schools will no longer have non-specialized blocks. Non-specialized public high schools will also no longer have specialized blocks.

Admission to non-specialized classes of specialized high schools, or specialized blocks in normal public high schools, will only be carried out until the end of the 2023-2024 school year.

Starting from the 2024-2025 school year, the new regulations will apply. Therefore, the Ministry of Education and Training has responded to the Hanoi Department of Education and Training to stop enrolling in grade 6 at Hanoi Amsterdam High School for the Gifted.
