The Trump administration and Ukraine were set to sign a mineral deal that collapsed after a tense meeting on February 28 in the Oval Office, when Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was asked to leave the building, according to people familiar with the matter.
Three sources familiar with the matter said President Donald Trump has told advisers he wants to announce the deal in a speech to Congress on the evening of March 4 (local time).
However, they also noted that the deal has not yet been signed and the situation could change.
The White House, the Office of the President of Ukraine and the Embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to the above information.
According to the original plan, Washington and Kiev would sign the above agreement during President Zelensky's visit to the US.
However, the deal was canceled after a tense meeting on February 28 in the Oval Office between President Trump and President Zelensky.
In recent days, US officials have been talking to Kiev about signing a mineral agreement. President Trump has also stated that Washington is still open to signing the agreement, while his Ukrainian counterpart Zelensky is also ready to sign the agreement.
In addition, the Ukrainian President also noted that the mineral agreement is part of broader agreements with the US and can provide security guarantees for Ukraine with the aim of ensuring lasting and fair peace./.
