Russia has launched its Ocean-2024 large-scale strategic naval exercise, which will be held simultaneously in the Pacific Ocean, the Arctic Ocean, as well as the Mediterranean, Caspian and Baltic Seas. The exercise, which began on September 10, is Russia's largest naval exercise in three decades, according to President Vladimir Putin.

Aimed at testing the combat readiness and interoperability of the Russian navy and air force fleets, the drills will run until September 16. The Russian military is expected to simulate real combat situations, Putin said as he attended the opening ceremony of the drills via video link.

The Russian Defense Ministry released a series of videos on September 10 that it said showed troops taking part in the drills. According to the Russian Defense Ministry, the Pacific Fleet was the first to launch a large-scale joint attack on a simulated enemy target on the first day of the drills. The fleet’s surface ships and submarines, as well as coastal defense systems, fired nearly a dozen cruise missiles in a coordinated salvo.

The drills involve more than 400 warships and submarines as well as auxiliary vessels, about 120 aircraft and more than 90,000 personnel. The Chinese military is also taking part in the Russian drills, with four ships and 15 aircraft from the People's Liberation Army (PLA), the head of the Russian Navy, Admiral Alexander Moiseyev, said.

Russia's long-planned exercise has been closely watched by the United States and regional NATO member Norway.

According to Norwegian observations since September 9, in preparation for the exercise, Russian warships have been moving from both the south and north to the country's offshore coast. "We are closely monitoring all movements," the Norwegian armed forces said when the first photos of Russian Baltic Fleet landing ships appeared.

"The Russian Navy has now started the Ocean-2024 exercise. The exercise entails increased activity from both the Northern Fleet and the Baltic Fleet in our vicinity, in addition to long-haul aircraft. We are prepared for this and we have planned to monitor Russia's movements together with our allies," said Vice Admiral Rune Andersen, head of the Norwegian Armed Forces (JHQ) operational headquarters.

On September 10, Pentagon spokesman Patrick Ryder said that Russia's ongoing large-scale Ocean-2024 naval exercise does not pose any threat to the United States and other NATO countries.

"The exercise does not pose any threat to the United States or the NATO alliance. The United States has been monitoring this planned exercise for some time and will continue to monitor and maintain close contact with our NATO allies and partners," the spokesperson said.
