On August 30, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that a joint operation between US and Iraqi forces recently killed 15 members of the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS) terrorist organization in western Iraq.

CENTCOM is the agency responsible for overseeing US military operations in the Middle East, including Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan and Yemen.
In a statement on social network X, CENTCOM said the operation was carried out on the morning of August 29 and did not cause any civilian casualties, but seven US soldiers were injured in the attack.
The campaign targets ISIS leaders to disrupt and degrade the organization's ability to plan, organize, and conduct attacks against Iraqi civilians, U.S. citizens, allies, and partners, in the region, and around the world.
According to CENTCOM, Iraqi security forces will continue to search the area.
Meanwhile, the Iraqi military statement said that among those killed were several key IS figures, but did not give details.
This force also destroyed all weapons, logistics equipment, and hideouts of IS, neutralized explosive devices, and seized many important documents, identity papers, and means of communication.
The US currently has about 2,500 troops in Iraq and 900 in Syria, as part of the international coalition against IS. Since the conflict broke out in the Gaza Strip (October 2023), US and allied forces in Iraq and Syria have been the targets of dozens of drone and missile attacks.
US forces have carried out several retaliatory strikes in both countries. Last week, US forces also announced the death of a senior leader of the Al-Qaeda-linked military wing in Syria.
