(Dan Tri) - Western media said that if Democratic candidate Kamala Harris wins the election on November 5, she may agree to let NATO invite Ukraine to join the military alliance.
The French newspaper Le Monde, citing a well-informed source, reported that the administration of US President Joe Biden does not appear to intend to strongly oppose NATO's invitation to Ukraine to join. The source said that if Kamala Harris wins the election on November 5, the US could begin taking steps in that direction. According to Le Monde , Mr. Biden took advantage of a short visit to Berlin on October 18 to discuss current issues related to Ukraine and the Middle East with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. The four leaders discussed the victory plan that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky presented to them in recent weeks. At the top of the list of topics discussed was NATO's invitation to Ukraine to join. Ukraine has expressed its desire to be invited to join the alliance before the end of Mr. Biden's term. Although the admission process will be lengthy and Ukraine will have to fulfill many conditions, Kiev believes that an official invitation from the alliance demonstrates Ukraine's commitment to its place in the Western security framework. According to Le Monde, the US and Germany have so far not agreed to NATO expansion to include Ukraine, while France and the UK seem to be more open to this option. However, the French newspaper said that the US is not too strongly opposed to inviting Ukraine to NATO. According to sources, if Ms. Harris wins the election, Mr. Biden may promote Ukraine's admission to NATO during the transition period. The French newspaper also emphasized that the decision to invite Ukraine to NATO or not requires the consensus of all 32 member states of the alliance. So far, Turkey, Hungary and Slovakia may be obstacles for Ukraine in the prospect of officially sending an invitation to join NATO. Earlier, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said he was concerned about Ukraine's victory plan, which included NATO inviting Ukraine to join immediately. According to Orban, this plan is not feasible and Hungary will not support this option. Meanwhile, during a visit to Kiev over the weekend, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot said that Paris is open to the idea of inviting Ukraine to join NATO.
