Some universities reduce consideration of high school transcripts

Some universities have narrowed down their admissions based on academic records because they believe that these results are uneven and make it difficult to select good candidates.

It is noted that at some public universities that have announced their 2024 enrollment plans, the method of considering academic records is gradually "narrowing" as schools set additional conditions, reduce enrollment quotas, or completely eliminate this admission method.

A week ago, Foreign Trade University (FTU) said it would maintain the same 6 methods as in recent years, including considering academic records; considering a combination of foreign language and international academic certificates; considering competency assessment test scores; using high school graduation exam results; and direct admission according to regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training.

The new point this year is that with the first two methods, in addition to the academic transcript score, candidates must achieve a minimum of 24 points on the high school graduation exam or higher, in three subjects in the admission group.

Meanwhile, Ho Chi Minh City University of Agriculture and Forestry reduced the admission quota based on academic records by about 10%, down to 25-30% of the total quota.

Ho Chi Minh City University of Architecture has also limited the consideration of academic records in recent years. In 2020, the school reserved 30% of the total enrollment quota by considering academic records, applied to all candidates, but by 2022, this rate will be only 15%, reserved for students of specialized schools.

Instead of reducing the quota or setting more conditions, the National Economics University (NEU) this year stopped recruiting students based on academic records. In previous years, the school usually reserved 10-15% of its quota for this method, applied to excellent students in specialized schools.

School representatives said that uneven academic results between localities and high schools, and the high rate of fake results are the reasons why schools are gradually tightening this method.

Dr. Tran Dinh Ly, Vice Principal of Ho Chi Minh City University of Agriculture and Forestry, said that the school analyzed the records of candidates for admission based on their academic records. The results showed that academic records were not consistent among localities.

"The results of the report card depend on the evaluation of teachers and schools. Each place evaluates differently, and there are also big differences between high schools in the same district in Ho Chi Minh City," added a representative of the Ho Chi Minh City University of Architecture.

For Foreign Trade University, setting higher screening criteria for admission based on academic records is intended to create a measure of correlation between high school graduation exam scores and academic records. Associate Professor Dr. Pham Thu Huong, Vice President of Foreign Trade University, said that this change helps the school consistently apply the floor score of 24 - excellent level - for all methods. Second, combining high school graduation exam scores with academic records creates an indirect comparison tool for high schools to standardize student evaluation.

"We should not have the mentality of denying the results of the entire process of general education. Instead, we need to accept it based on scientific basis and accompany to help the general education system become more and more perfect, approaching international education," said Ms. Huong.

Another reason is that schools want to reduce the rate of fake admissions in admissions. Associate Professor Dr. Bui Duc Trieu, Head of the Training Management Department, said that over the years, the school has found that most excellent students in specialized schools are eligible for admission with international certificates or private exam scores.

"Removing the need to consider academic records for students at specialized schools will reduce the virtual rate, because a student can use many methods," said Mr. Trieu.

This also happens at Ho Chi Minh City University of Agriculture and Forestry. Every year, the virtual rate of the high school transcript review method is quite high because candidates are admitted by many methods, but when confirming admission, they often choose to consider the graduation exam scores or the ability assessment test scores. Therefore, the school reduces the high school transcript review to reserve quotas for other methods.

Last August, Ms. Nguyen Thu Thuy, Director of the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education and Training, said that only 32.2% of early admission candidates (based on academic records, direct admission, priority admission) placed their admission wish at number 1. The remaining nearly 70% of early admission candidates were virtual, causing many difficulties for schools in enrollment.

However, to date, 60 universities have announced that they will consider transcripts for the 2024 school year, including military schools. Many universities believe that this method is convenient for candidates, and that the academic performance of students admitted based on transcripts is not much different from that of students admitted based on high school graduation exam scores.
