Being honored as "Farmer Scientist" for the 5th time in 2024, Mr. Vo Van Ut, a farmer in Tan Hoa hamlet, Duc Lap Ha commune, Duc Hoa district (Long An province) felt proud, encouraged and motivated to continue to innovate.
Born and raised in Duc Hoa (Long An), Mr. Vo Van Ut (born in 1961, residing in Tan Hoa hamlet, Duc Lap Ha commune) clearly felt the hardships of people growing corn, peanuts, and sesame with high costs during the harvesting stage.
It was those concerns and worries that motivated him to research and successfully invent agricultural tools.
In 1982, after graduating from Long An Pedagogical College, Mr. Ut taught at Duc Hoa Town Secondary School.
About 7 years later, he had to quit teaching to return home to take care of his elderly parents and take care of his family's 10 hectares of peanut land.
Mr. Ut found that the cost of agricultural production was quite high. Since sowing seeds still used manual methods, many corn and peanut farmers had to leave their fields fallow due to lack of labor.

Therefore, he sought ways to help people harvest with high productivity and low cost. During a visit to a new economic model in Dong Nai province organized by the Duc Hoa District Agricultural Extension Center, Mr. Ut saw many types of agricultural machines that could be applied locally.
Returning home, he bought materials and then researched and experimented. During the process, he encountered many difficulties and had to fix it many times. As a result, he successfully created a corn seeding machine.
The corn seeder has a width of 1.2m and uses a 22 horsepower traction motor. The machine consists of: 2 seed compartments; 2 small plow blades to make rows for the corn seeds to fall; 2 large plow blades to cut irrigation grooves; a round plastic tube to cover the seeds.
The result of operating in 2 hours, the machine can sow 1 hectare of finished corn, saving about 20 labors compared to the traditional sowing method. Thereby shortening the time and reducing most of the labor time for farmers.
By applying the seed sowing machine on 200 hectares of corn land, the germination rate is over 90% and the yield is uniform and stable. With this corn sowing machine, Mr. Vo Van Ut won the Encouragement Prize at the 4th "Technical Innovation of Farmers" Contest of Long An province, 2015-2016.
Continuing his success, in 2022, Mr. Ut created a sesame sowing tool. The tool helps farmers sow 3 hectares of seeds per day, compared to 0.5 hectares per day if sown by hand; the plant density is even, sesame produces more fruit than when sown by hand - the yield is 100 kg/ha higher.
In addition, sowing by machine reduces the amount of seeds by 50% (reduces 2.5 kg/ha) and care, watering and drainage are easier.
This initiative helps sesame farmers in the province boldly apply mechanization, promote intensive farming, convert specialized rice production areas to two rice crops and one sesame crop to improve efficiency and develop production in a sustainable direction.
At the 7th "Technical Innovation of Farmers" Contest of Long An province, 2021-2022, Mr. Ut's sesame sowing tool won the Encouragement Prize.
In 2023, there were many types of peanut plucking machines on the market, but they were small in size, had low productivity, and were not suitable for peanut beds in Duc Hoa. Mr. Vo Van Ut researched and manufactured a machine to overcome these disadvantages, with a larger size and faster operation.

In 3 hours, the machine can harvest 1 hectare of peanuts - equivalent to 30 manual labor days.
The machine helps to free up labor, harvest faster and is suitable for peanut beds in Duc Hoa. Currently, the machine is easy to operate and is being used in many local households.
With this peanut threshing machine, Mr. Vo Van Ut was recently awarded First Prize at the 8th "Technical Innovation of Farmers" Contest of Long An province in 2023-2024, in mid-September 2024.
Mr. Vo Van Ut, a resident of My Hanh Bac commune, Duc Hoa district, said that his family has a tradition of growing peanuts. Previously, from sowing seeds to harvesting was very difficult due to lack of labor and high costs.
At one point, the family was about to abandon the area they were cultivating. Since having Mr. Ut's agricultural machines, the family has felt secure and continued production.
According to Mr. Ngo Thanh Tuyen, Vice Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Long An province, the innovative peanut harvesting machine solution of farmer Vo Van Ut is highly applicable, originating from reality, the concerns of farmers that need to be included in production. Mr. Ut is considered a typical example of technical innovation and needs to be replicated.
Mr. Vo Van Ut is one of 56 individuals honored by the Central Committee of the Vietnam Farmers' Union in coordination with relevant ministries and branches at the 5th "Scientist of Farmers" award in 2024, scheduled to be held in October.
Mr. Vo Van Ut expressed his joy: Receiving the Certificate of Merit at the "Technical Innovation of Farmers" Contest in Long An province is a source of encouragement and most importantly, it is the joy of liberation, not depending on labor, helping farmers increase their income.
In particular, being honored as "Farmer Scientist" for the 5th time in 2024, he feels proud and is encouraged to continue creating agricultural machines to serve farmers.
