US Secret Service once protected Mr. Trump
On April 15 (US time), a Manhattan criminal court in New York City will begin hearing charges against former President Trump for paying hush money to silence adult film actress Stormy Daniels before the 2016 US presidential election.
Before Mr. Trump, no former US president had ever faced a criminal trial. However, both the US Secret Service and the NYPD said they were committed to ensuring security during the trial.
In a joint statement on April 12 (US time), the US Secret Service and NYPD announced their readiness for the criminal trial on April 15.
"The US Secret Service is prepared to effectively carry out its mission of protecting (Mr. Trump) in New York," USA Today quoted Mr. Patrick J. Freaney, who is in charge of the Secret Service Office in New York, as saying on April 12.
Trump backs US House Speaker amid impeachment threat from hardline Republicans
As a former US President, Mr. Trump has always received protection from the US Secret Service, which carries out security measures such as blocking off streets. Mr. Trump's recent appearance at a New York civil court hearing went off without incident.
NYPD Chief Edward Caban said the city's police are familiar with high-security events.
According to Mr. Caban, the NYPD has a long-standing relationship with the US Secret Service and the court system, allowing the police to protect the safety of the court and ensure peaceful protests outside the courthouse, as well as maintain normal traffic operations.
The trial is expected to last six to eight weeks in New York City's crowded Manhattan district.
