Coming from Thu Dau Mot City (Binh Duong) to the scholarship award ceremony early, Nguyen Thi My Hang and her granddaughter were more cheerful after many days of anxiously waiting for the opportunity to receive a scholarship. For nearly 10 years, since her father passed away and her mother became ill and unable to work, Hang grew up thanks to her grandmother's lottery tickets, which she had to endure the sun and rain.
Mrs. Nguyen Thi No (67 years old, Hang's grandmother) rides her bike every day trying to sell 150 lottery tickets to earn 150,000 VND to support her daughter and grandchild. That amount of money is enough for the whole family of three to feed, not to mention the money for her grandchild to go to school.
Hearing that her granddaughter had become a new student of law and maritime policy at the Ho Chi Minh City University of Transport, Mrs. No was both happy and worried. She was happy that her granddaughter was doing well, but she was worried about where she would get the money to continue her studies.
Sharing with us when she learned that Hang received a scholarship from Tuoi Tre newspaper, Mrs. No was moved because her granddaughter had the first chance to reach the lecture hall.
“I am so happy. Thank you so much for the scholarship because it has helped my grandchild pay for his tuition, otherwise I could not afford it,” said Mrs. No. She said that on the afternoon of November 17, she asked the lottery agent to let her take half a day off from selling tickets to take her grandchild to Ho Chi Minh City to receive the scholarship.
My Hang is also happy and grateful to the benefactors who gave her the scholarship. “When I graduate, I will work to earn money to repay my grandmother and those who helped me,” Hang confided.

New student gets advance scholarship due to hardship: “If Tuoi Tre didn't help, I would have had to drop out of school”
Driving alone a long distance from Binh Chanh District (HCMC) to receive a scholarship, Pham Quach Bao Loc, a new student at the School of Labor and Social Affairs, said he was not tired, and was even very happy - Photo: TU TRUNG
Pham Quach Bao Loc, a new student at the School of Labor and Social Affairs (HCMC campus), spent more than an hour driving from his home in Binh Chanh District to the scholarship awarding location. Despite the long journey, Loc said he was not tired and was even very happy.
Loc is an orphan, his mother, Quach Ngoc Thu, is now 62 years old. The mother and son depend on each other in a damp house, hidden in an alley of Vinh Loc B commune, Binh Chanh district, Ho Chi Minh City. The highlight of the house, which is made of old wooden panels, is a series of certificates of merit, certificates of merit, and certificates bearing the name of Pham Quach Bao Loc for his achievements in academic competitions.
At the end of August, Tuoi Tre newspaper decided to advance the scholarship (15 million VND) so that Loc could complete the admission procedures in time.
“Because I received the scholarship in advance, I had to attend the ceremony today. I wanted to meet and thank the uncles, aunts, benefactors and the organizers for their timely help. Even though I ran around everywhere and worked as much as I could, if I hadn’t received the scholarship in advance, I probably would have had to drop out of school,” Loc said emotionally.
The initial support made Loc full of confidence. Loc said that he has stopped doing heavy work, working late at night (carrying rice, selling goods, baking...) like before. Instead, Loc applied to be a tutor, because it is more convenient anyway.

Nguyen Duong Quat Tuan – a freshman at the University of Information Technology, Ho Chi Minh City National University – took the bus at noon from Thu Duc City to Binh Thanh District, where the scholarship award ceremony took place very early. Tuan stood on the stage, sweating profusely after having to walk a long distance.
Even when he saw his name on the list of scholarship recipients this time, Tuan said he was still very surprised and could not believe it. “I was told over the phone that I had passed and would receive the scholarship on November 17, which was a huge surprise. I thought I had been tricked. For me and my mother, this scholarship is extremely valuable and can help us do a lot of things,” Tuan said.
Tuan said he has no father, his mother is a garment worker in Quang Ngai. The small salary is the source of income for his mother and three children (after Tuan, he has a younger sister in 8th grade). Growing up in hardship, Tuan matured very early.
The first time Tuan came to Ho Chi Minh City was to enroll in school, he went alone. Tuan knew he would have to work a lot so he took the initiative to rent a room. Living with four other students in a rented room, cooking for himself or eating free school meals (lunch) helped Tuan save the most on expenses.
“I just got a part-time job editing videos for a company and get paid about 2 million VND/month. I save that money to pay for accommodation and food. It’s hard to have any left over, but if possible, I will save it to pay for tuition,” Tuan said.

Associate Professor, Dr. Vu Hai Quan said that Ho Chi Minh City National University has hundreds of thousands of students, many students of Ho Chi Minh City National University have received the "Tiep suc den truong" scholarship in the past time and many graduates have stable jobs, life and further development.
Scholarships show the community’s concern for students in difficult circumstances. The valuable thing is that scholarships also give students confidence. Coming from remote rural areas, students coming to Ho Chi Minh City are not only bewildered. Scholarships also give them more confidence. From there, they confidently move forward.
“In addition to the Support to School scholarship, we also introduce and award other scholarships to students, creating conditions for them to stay in boarding schools…
I hope and expect that despite the difficulties, students will join hands towards the future and meet the expectations and concerns of the community," he said.

A film about people who dropped out of school to make a living but still 'resist' with determination
Two new students Nguyen Ngoc Nhu Uyen and Le Huu Vinh - Performed by: HAI TRIEU - NHA CHAN - MAI HUYEN - TON VU
The entire auditorium was immersed in emotional silence as they watched the film about two young lives that were soon entwined with adversity and hardship. Witnessing the journey of rising up and the strong will to pursue their dream of studying of the two young people made many people unable to hold back their emotions. Many tears soon rolled down the cheeks of those present in the auditorium.
Not only did he help his blind parents see, he also shouldered the burden of the country and entered university.
Nhu Uyen shared in the program's exchange section - Photo: TU TRUNG
Both parents of the new student of Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry Nguyen Ngoc Nhu Uyen are blind in both eyes. Life is full of hardship and poverty, and Uyen has almost gotten used to it. Until COVID-19 struck, Uyen will always remember it because that is when all the difficulties were at their peak.
In a rented house in Go Vap district, Uyen’s father, who was already sick, now had spinal stenosis and had to stay in bed. All the burden of food, clothing, rent, etc. fell on the weak young girl’s shoulders. Uyen worked all kinds of jobs to take care of and support her parents.
It seemed that a difficult life had overwhelmed Nguyen Ngoc Nhu Uyen when she decided to drop out of school in 11th grade. But then, her will to rise up and her desire to pursue knowledge, and further, her dream of changing her life through writing, never faded, as if pulling Uyen back.
After so much hardship from working so early, Nhu Uyen can now smile and walk forward as a new marketing student at Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry. For Ms. Nguyen Thi Minh Xuan, the time when her daughter Nhu Uyen had to drop out of school to work was a time of despair.
“When my child decided to go back to school and said, ‘Mom, I got enough points to pass the university entrance exam,’ I was really happy. But then he told me about the tuition fee, and I just said ‘yes’ for fear that he would be sad. Mom and Dad would try to take care of it, but I honestly didn’t know how to handle it,” Ms. Xuan said, crying.
No words can describe Mr. Phung's utter helplessness because he gave birth to a child but could not provide for his child to have a single day of peace. In order to struggle to take care of his child, Mr. Phung is gritting his teeth to endure the pain of his spinal spurs, groping in the dark to make a living by selling goods and cotton swabs on the street.
Thinking about the days ahead, when she has to go to school more, can no longer work extra hours, or deliver goods as much as before… also makes Uyen worried. But Uyen has to arrange to seize the opportunity to study – for her, it is also an opportunity to change her life.

Sharing at the exchange on stage, Nguyen Ngoc Nhu Uyen (a new student at Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry) said that in the past 21 years, she has experienced three biggest difficulties in her life. During her years as a student, Uyen felt self-conscious because she had to face teasing and scorn from her friends because her parents were blind.
“But as I gradually got used to it and overcame it, I felt sorry for and proud of my parents. I felt I had to study harder so that I could work and earn money to take care of my parents and younger brother,” Uyen said.
The second difficulty was having to choose to drop out of school at the beginning of 11th grade to go to work when the family lost all their income. She then went from working at a coffee shop, milk tea shop to a technology delivery person. After having a little income, Uyen went back to school, graduated from high school and went to university.
Being studious, the girl knew that only studying could help her overcome the darkness that was already too much in her family. But at that time, Uyen faced a third difficulty: Where would she get money to study because the university tuition was too much for her family.
Now receiving a scholarship from philanthropists, Uyen has more motivation to go to school to change her own fate.
“My biggest dream is to be able to finish my studies to take care of my parents and younger brother, then come back to help people in the same situation as me,” Uyen confided.
Freshman at Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics – lost both parents, had to work as a worker for 3 years and then study again
Le Huu Vinh – new student of Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics – Photo: DUYEN PHAN
The life of Le Huu Vinh – an auditing student at the University of Economics, Ho Chi Minh City – is a typical story of determination and perseverance. Orphaned at a young age, Vinh had to suspend his studies to work as a factory worker for three consecutive years.
It seemed like his dream of studying was over, but with a strong will, Vinh decided to return to school and pursue knowledge. The hope of opening new doors for himself was the motivation for Vinh to rise up.
Although he dropped out of school for three years to work as a factory worker, when he returned to the classroom, Vinh was not inferior to his friends in terms of academic performance. As an orphan, having to do all the housework by himself was almost normal for Vinh.
Seeing Vinh lost in life, Ms. Nguyen Hue Thu (Vinh's older sister) moved to Ho Chi Minh City to live and earn a living with all kinds of jobs, conveniently taking care of her younger brother.
“Currently, both sisters do not have a home and rely on outside family. But we will try to make sure Vinh does not have to drop out of school. It is too difficult for him to drop out of school,” said Hue Thu’s older sister.
Faced with difficulties, lacking love and a spiritual support, everyone in the audience was surprised by a Le Huu Vinh who was full of effort. Perhaps growing up early and earning a living on his own since childhood made Vinh very knowledgeable and understanding, seeing difficulties as motivation.
“It is better to have both father and mother, without father or mother is like a broken string”, but with all his determination, Huu Vinh wants to fix the “string” of his life. And the way for Vinh to fix his life is nothing other than to study.
On stage, Le Huu Vinh (Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics) shyly talked about the time he had to drop out of school because of difficulties. But even so, for Vinh, the time he took off school to work as a factory worker was extremely meaningful. That helped Vinh have the opportunity to better understand his own strengths and passions.
It was those perspectives that gave Vinh more motivation to return to the podium, and now to step into the university lecture hall.
The audience was moved to tears when the sister who had worked hard to raise Vinh suddenly appeared. The hug between Le Huu Vinh and his sister Nguyen Hue Thu and the reunion that the special program created moved the entire audience.
"Vinh's ability to come to school today is a result of so much effort. No matter what, as a sister, I will try harder so that Vinh can go to school and study like his friends," said his sister Nguyen Hue Thu.

Listening to the sharing of the two characters interacting on stage, Do Thi Xuan Mai, a new student of Ho Chi Minh City University of Education, from Dong Nai, shared with tears in her eyes: “Hearing your story and seeing my own image, I could not hold back my emotions. I also lost my father when I was 6 months old. My mother sold vegetables to raise my two brothers and me to go to school. My brother is currently in his fourth year.
I went to Ho Chi Minh City to study and live in a rented house. Every month, I saved as much as I could, but it cost about 1.6 million VND. As for food, I brought food and vegetables from home to share with my roommates to help my mother save money.
On weekends I take the bus home to help my mother sell vegetables and on the other days I bring vegetables and some food back to school. There are many friends who are in more difficult situations than me so I will try to overcome all difficulties.
Dr. Tang Ha Nam Anh (Viet Bone and Joint Clinic) - sponsor: Tuition fees are getting too high, which makes me sad, because poor students can drop out of school.

Doctor Nam Anh said that because he was busy with work, he had little opportunity to participate in social activities, especially helping poor new students. But the fact that universities are constantly increasing tuition fees makes him worried, because with tuition fees at many schools reaching nearly 100 million/year, he is afraid that many young people, no matter how good they are, will have difficulty keeping up.
“I accidentally read an article about a new student who was very good at studying, had high scores, and was admitted to a quality school, but because of poverty, he thought about dropping out of school. From then on, I became more interested in the program, and gradually accompanied and contributed a little to help them take the first steps,” said Dr. Nam Anh.
Dr. Tang Ha Nam Anh said he was more concerned, because after all, all the help and value of the scholarship were limited. From there, he hoped that new students would need to clearly define their own learning path, strive, and work carefully.

One of the earliest students to receive the scholarship was new student Ngo Thi Kieu Vy from Cu Chi district, Ho Chi Minh City, a new student at Saigon University.
Vy lost her father during the days preparing for her 12th grade graduation exam. The burden of making a living fell on her hard-working mother, a worker for a shoe company.
“My mother’s salary supports the whole family, I feel so sorry for her. When I get a scholarship, I will save it to pay for tuition, to help my mother ease some of her worries,” Vy confided.
Vy’s mother took her to receive the scholarship, and her aunt and two cousins went with her. A driver near her house offered to take her for free. “I saw that the mother and daughter were in difficult circumstances, and Vy was trying hard to get into university, so I helped take the mother and daughter to receive the scholarship and encouraged her that no matter how difficult it was, everyone would be there for her,” said Trong.
Known as a native of Ho Chi Minh City, Ngo Thi Kieu Vy (a 12th grader at An Nhon Tay High School, Cu Chi District) rarely gets to go to the city center. Now she knows all the bus routes to get from her accommodation in Binh Chanh District to school and return to Cu Chi District on weekends to visit her family.
Ms. Tong Thi Thanh Tuyen, Ngo Thi Kieu Vy's 12th grade homeroom teacher, said over the phone that Vy's academic results in the 12th grade were 9.0, excellent student and good conduct. Despite the family's unfortunate circumstances, her father passed away right in the last days of the 12th grade, she tried to overcome them to continue studying and achieve good results to enter Saigon University.

Sharing at the scholarship award ceremony, Dr. Nguyen Xuan Hong said that in addition to training and scientific research, community service is also a task that Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry focuses on.
“The school’s motto is not to let students drop out of school due to lack of funds. Therefore, we are honored to join Tuoi Tre newspaper in contributing our efforts to nurturing the future of the country.
I was also a student, so I understand the value of receiving help when you are not able to go to school. And I see that students also appreciate that very much,” said Dr. Hong.

Ms. Thanh Nhon works as a worker in Dong Nai province. Today, she happily held her child and took Lai Thi Thanh Ngan to receive the scholarship. Ms. Nhon shared: "Thanh Ngan has lived with me since she was born, so when we got the good news that she received the scholarship, my sister and I attended the 2024 TSĐT Program of Tuoi Tre newspaper" - Photo: TU TRUNG
Attending the scholarship award ceremony with her sister from her hometown in Thong Nhat district (Dong Nai), Lai Thi Thanh Ngan (a new student majoring in multimedia communications at the College of Radio and Television II) said that this scholarship is extremely meaningful to her, as it can help cover and repay the debt that Ngan's sister had borrowed earlier to pay her tuition fees at the beginning of the year.
Ngan confided that her father passed away before her daughter was born, and her mother later had a new family. Since childhood, Ngan and her sister relied on each other to grow up.
Ms. Lai Thi Thanh Nhon (Ngan's older sister) was happy when her sister passed the entrance exam to college in the career she loved. Ms. Nhon and her husband are factory workers and are raising a small child. Due to difficult circumstances, she had many times thought of letting her sister drop out of school because she was afraid she would not be able to take care of herself. But seeing her sister crying and begging her to let her go to school, she tried to save her salary so that she could have the opportunity to fulfill her dream.
Recently, when her younger sister needed money to pay her tuition at the beginning of the year, in addition to deducting her salary, Nhon and her husband had to borrow money from everywhere, then pawn a phone for 2 million VND to barely have enough.
“Now, every time I receive my salary, I give Ngan a portion to have money for food and living expenses. She is also studying and working during the holidays to have more money for her studies, earning every penny she can. The scholarship from Tuoi Tre newspaper today has really helped my sister a lot,” said Ms. Nhon.

“Ngoc has been an excellent student for 12 years, so I am very proud of her. When we heard that our daughter passed the university entrance exam, the whole family was both happy and worried, because the family was very poor. The family had no land, so my husband and I worked as hired laborers in a dragon fruit growing area for others. Even though we were poor, my husband and I tried to let our daughter study because she was good.
Hearing the news that my daughter received a scholarship, my whole family was so happy that we couldn't sleep.
Today, I took a day off from work to take my daughter. With this money, my husband and I can ease the burden of the beginning of the school year for our daughter. The road ahead is still long, but we will not let our daughter drop out of school halfway.”

Watching the reportage of 22 seasons of “Tiep suc den truong”, many new students, accompanying parents and guests shed tears before the documentary footage.
Those are tears of sympathy and understanding between new students. Those tears are also the sadness and helplessness of fathers and mothers who cannot take care of, have enough strength and power to take care of their beloved children to have a smooth life, and the concern of sponsors because they know that the scholarships are not enough to help new students stop being unstable.

Dong Van Hieu An said he was very happy to be back and attend today's ceremony. Thanks to that, there were many happy memories of the time he received the precious scholarship that day. Quoting the poem Listening to the sound of pounding rice by Uncle Ho, which his grandfather once read to him, is the way Hieu An sends a message to the new students. "Pounding rice brings so much pain/ After pounding, the rice is as white as cotton/ Living in this world is the same/ Only through hard training can one achieve success".
“I want to tell you that life always has difficulties. Therefore, you must always be confident because only through hardship can you achieve success,” said Mr. Hieu An.
