According to Paultan, electric vehicle fires are rare. But when they do occur, the challenge of extinguishing them is greater than that of conventional internal combustion engine vehicles. Heat loss is one of the main concerns. There are many solutions to this problem, one of which is the use of fire blankets to control the situation.

After being tested, if the fire blanket meets the standards, it will have a sticker for consumers to identify.

The use of electric vehicle fire blankets is actually mandatory under the country’s electric vehicle charging station guidelines. Authorities and stakeholders need to comply and plan when designing and constructing charging stations.

The instructions say that depending on the number of charging bays, the number of fire blankets required will vary. If there is one charging bay, only one fire blanket is needed. But if there are 11-15 bays, three of these blankets are needed.

However, to be recognized as a qualified fire blanket, it is necessary to comply with technical regulations. The Malaysian Standards and Industrial Research Institute has announced a service for testing and certifying fire blankets for electric vehicles to meet technical regulations. This certification is recognized by the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department.

At the same time, this demonstrates the commitment of the Malaysian Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) and agencies in ensuring the safety of electric vehicle users.

“Although the probability of an electric vehicle catching fire is much lower than a conventional vehicle, we still need to be prepared. As the saying goes, prepare an umbrella before it rains. So for electric vehicle owners as well as electric vehicle charging station owners, make sure you have a fire blanket. More importantly, make sure the blanket has the Malaysian Standards and Industrial Research Institute stamp on it. If it doesn’t have this stamp, don’t buy it,” said the MITI minister.

In terms of price, in Malaysia, an online search shows that a stickered electric vehicle fire blanket sells for RM4,500 (over VND23 million). This is not cheap, but it may be worth the money if the buyer thinks about the usefulness of the blanket in case of fire.
