Why Australia increasingly favors Vietnamese students

The Australian National University (ANU) held an information day for Vietnamese students and parents on August 5, attracting hundreds of attendees in Ho Chi Minh City. The event brought together representatives from all seven faculties at the university and the application review department to share and directly answer questions from students.

Policies favoring Vietnamese people

Speaking to Thanh Nien Newspaper reporters on the sidelines of the event, Mr. Andy Pham, ANU’s Senior Manager of the Mekong region, said that previously the university had only organized information days in a few countries such as Singapore and India. This is the first year Vietnam has become one of the destinations of this event.

"Vietnam is a potential market with many excellent students who possess good English skills. At the same time, ANU has just issued a policy of direct admission for Vietnamese students from 92 specialized schools and schools with scores based on grade 12 transcripts starting from 2024, and this is an opportunity for you to learn more about the school," Mr. Andy explained.

According to Mr. Andy, every year ANU grants more than 200 25% and 50% scholarships to international students at all levels, with priority given to Vietnam. The scholarships are based on only one factor: grade point average (GPA), not on standardized test results or extracurricular activities or essays to reduce pressure, the ANU representative emphasized.

ANU is a member of the Group of Eight, an alliance of eight leading universities in Australia, ranked 34th in the world according to QS World University Rankings 2024. In addition to ANU, the other seven leading universities all have policies to directly admit Vietnamese students, each with different criteria. Some universities have also organized information days in Vietnam.

Vietnam is an important market

More and more Australian schools are offering preferential admissions, scholarships and events specifically for Vietnamese people. According to Ms. Rebecca Ball, Senior Trade Counsellor of the Australian Trade and Investment Commission (Austrade), this comes from the fact that the two countries are "good friends", and Vietnam is also one of Australia's important markets in terms of education.

"Australia currently has more than 50 universities and higher education institutions operating in Vietnam. On the other hand, many schools such as ANU are witnessing an increase in the number of international students from Vietnam. The Vietnamese student community in Australia is therefore also expanding," said Ms. Rebecca Ball.

Adding her perspective, Ms. Sarah Hooper, Australian Consul General in Ho Chi Minh City, said that Vietnamese students are extremely hard-working, bright, self-motivated and deeply committed to their studies. This tradition of studiousness helps them always achieve good results, and this is a characteristic that Australian universities love.

"People of the two countries also have many things in common that help us live in harmony with each other," Ms. Sarah Hooper shared with Thanh Nien Newspaper reporter.

According to Ms. Sarah Hooper, Australia has many policies to support Vietnamese students to access the country's education system at many levels, from high school to postgraduate. Specifically, the Australian government always grants full scholarships for master's degrees in all majors and universities in Australia, and has a clear student visa policy. Just look it up online to know all the steps involved.

"In addition to studying abroad from the beginning, you can choose to study at Australian school campuses in Vietnam such as RMIT University, Western Sydney University, Swinburne University or register for the 2+2 international joint program. In addition, we are also cooperating in vocational training. On the other hand, more and more Vietnamese high schools are teaching the Australian education program, and many Vietnamese students come to Australia to study high school," Ms. Sarah Hooper informed.

Mr. Rittwick Visen, representative of the Faculty of Engineering, Computer Science and Cybernetics at ANU, said that the post-graduation visa duration for certain fields such as engineering and computer science has just been extended by 2 years by the Australian government for all levels of study.

According to Ms. Sarah Hooper, 2023 marks the 50th anniversary of Australia-Vietnam diplomatic relations and education has been an important part of this relationship. Australian Consul General Sarah Hooper expects that educational cooperation, through training learners and providing strategic advice to the Vietnamese education sector, will continue to grow strongly in the coming time.

According to statistics from the Australian Department of Education, there are currently 608,942 international students studying courses in Australia from January to May 2023. Of these, Vietnam has a total of 23,525 international students, ranking 6th after China, India, Nepal, Colombia and the Philippines.
