The 2024 admissions period shows a surge in the number of candidates applying for the Pedagogy major with an increase of more than 200,000 wishes compared to last year. This shows the strong attraction of this major again.
High recruitment demand, stable salary
Ha Thi Anh, a 12th grade student at Ngo Quyen High School ( Hai Phong city), said she decided to apply for the Pedagogy major after carefully considering her future employment and income prospects.
"My family has a mother and aunt who are both preschool teachers. At first, I did not intend to pursue a career in education because I saw that my mother and aunt both worked too hard, while teachers' salaries were not commensurate with the workload from 7am to 5-6pm.
With the new policies, especially the current regulations on teachers' salaries and allowances, I see that if a teacher receives a basic salary, they will have an income from 5 million VND to a maximum of more than 15 million VND/month, not including the 30% classroom allowance. This income level can meet living needs," Ha Thi Anh shared.
With a good salary and high recruitment demand because many localities are lacking teachers, Ha Thi Anh said she is determined to pursue a career in Pedagogy whether she passes her first choice, the Mathematics Department, Hanoi National University of Education or not.
In fact, the shortage of teachers in many provinces and cities cannot be resolved in the near future. Statistics from the Ministry of Education and Training show that the education sector is currently short of more than 118,000 teachers at all levels in many localities across the country.
In Hanoi City, Mr. Doan Minh Chau, Principal of Nguyen Thi Minh Khai High School (Bac Tu Liem District), said that although it is one of the top schools in the city, in the 2024-2025 school year, the school still has to recruit a series of contract teachers, from Math, Literature, English to some elective subjects such as History, Physics...
For many private schools in Hanoi, the shortage of teachers is also very difficult and forces these schools to recruit recent graduates with no teaching experience, with the hope of training, tutoring, and support during the teaching process.
Rapid shift in training industry selection trends
The year 2024 marks a surge in the number of applications for the Pedagogy major. Deputy Minister of Education and Training Hoang Minh Son said that in 2024, the Pedagogy major had the highest number of applicants in the past 4 years, an increase of about 200,000 applications, equivalent to an increase of 85% compared to last year. The increase in applications is spread evenly across Pedagogy training schools across the country.
According to statistics from the Ministry of Education and Training, among nearly 400 training majors, divided into 24 fields, the four fields that attract the most candidates are Pedagogy, Business and Management, Engineering and Technology, and Computer Science. Dr. Tran Ba Trinh, Head of Training Department, Hanoi National University of Education, said:
The school received about 40,000 applications (for both teacher training and non-pedagogy programs). Previously, with early admission methods, the school recorded a sharp increase in the number of applications. Candidates registering for the school's competency assessment exam increased 2.5 times compared to last year.
For Da Lat University, the total number of registered wishes in 2024 is about 15,000, while at Hanoi Pedagogical University 2 and Ho Chi Minh City Pedagogical University, the number of registered wishes is 32,900 and 51,600 respectively; an increase of about 1.9 - 2.2 times compared to 2023.
With the number of candidates registering for admission increasing sharply, the expected benchmark score for Pedagogy this year will also increase sharply. Dr. Huynh Trung Phong, Director of the Center for Student Support and Entrepreneurship Development at Ho Chi Minh City University of Education, said that the benchmark score for the Pedagogy majors of Mathematics, Literature, and English at this institution could be up to 29, an increase of 1-2 points; other majors in the teacher training group are likely to increase by about 1 point.
Similarly, for Hanoi National University of Education, Dr. Tran Ba Trinh commented that the general increase could be 0.25 - 1 point. Some majors with reduced quotas compared to last year such as Physics, Chemistry, Biology Pedagogy, the standard score could be 1 - 2 points higher.
