According to the group of lawmakers, Israeli ministers, including Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, incited violence in Israeli settlements in the occupied territories.
A letter sent by nearly 90 Democratic lawmakers to US President Joe Biden expressed deep concern about the increase in violence in settlements, measures aimed at weakening the Palestinian Authority and destabilizing the West Bank.
The letter, signed by 17 Senators and 71 Representatives, asserted that Israel has carried out more than 1,270 attacks against Palestinians in the West Bank, an average of more than three violent incidents per day.
According to Democratic Senator Chris Van Hollen and several House members, Mr. Biden has the authority to impose sanctions based on an existing executive order.
These sanctions will send a message not only to Israel and the Palestinians, but also to other US allies around the world that Washington is ready to fight for humanitarian issues.
White House spokespeople and the Israeli Embassy have yet to respond to the call.
For decades, the US has supported a two-state solution between Israel and Palestine, while calling on Tel Aviv not to expand settlements.
Prime Minister Netanyahu and his allies celebrated the recent White House victory of President-elect Donald Trump, Israel's steadfast but somewhat unpredictable ally.
