According to some gardeners, the price of An Phuoc plums being purchased by traders at the garden ranges from 35,000 - 38,000 VND/kg. In particular, type I plums are purchased by traders at about 42,000 - 44,000 VND/kg. With this selling price, on average, with a planting area of 1,300m2, farmers earn a profit of 30 - 40 million VND.
Phong Hoa commune is one of the localities with the largest plum cultivation area in Lai Vung district with nearly 300 hectares. Currently, in addition to An Phuoc plum cultivation, farmers in the commune also cultivate other plum varieties such as: pink peach, three-flower, green sugar...
Unlike many other fruit trees, An Phuoc plums produce about 3 crops per year, with an average yield of 1-2 tons per hectare. An Phuoc plums have the advantage of being easy to cultivate and giving high yields, so in recent years, in addition to Phong Hoa commune, farmers in neighboring communes of Lai Vung district have also chosen this crop to develop their economy.
Lai Vung gardeners (Dong Thap) harvest plums and classify them before delivering them to consumers.
In order to facilitate agricultural output, many gardeners also promote the cultivation of off-season plums, usually starting from around May to September of the lunar calendar. At this time, the weather changes, the air is cold and the rain lasts for a long time, so it is difficult to process plums to flower and set fruit, so the yield is often very low, but in return, the price of plums will be higher than the regular crop. However, some gardeners said that this year's off-season plums flowered earlier than the same period in previous years, the fruit set rate is higher, and the yield is not inferior to the regular crop plums.
Mr. Vo Huu Duc - a plum grower in Phong Hoa commune, Lai Vung district, said: "Although it is the off-season, the plum yield is not inferior to the last crop. With a total cultivated area of about 6 hectares, this season, my plum garden harvested over 10 tons of fruit. Thanks to the good harvest and good price, my family is very excited."
Aiming for sustainable production, currently, most plum growers in Lai Vung district apply the solution of using nets for plum gardens. This is considered an effective solution to help gardeners avoid fruit flies, reduce damage as well as improve the quality of local plums...
