Hai Ba Trung District (Hanoi) is collecting public opinions to complete the urban space design project around Thien Quang Lake. The highlight of the project is the design of 4 squares at the corners of the lake and 1 square at the Thong Nhat Park flower garden.

According to the People's Committee of Hai Ba Trung District, the urban space design project around Thien Quang Lake has the advantage of being located in the center of the district, with convenient transportation and a dense population. The lake has a wide landscape, the lakeside park has many old trees as well as long-standing religious and cultural works.

The special feature of this area is that it is adjacent to Thong Nhat Park - the largest park in the 4 inner city districts, where many residents live. Currently, Hai Ba Trung district is organizing Tran Nhan Tong walking street (adjacent to Thien Quang lake and Thong Nhat Park) on weekends.

The current state of Thien Quang Lake and the sidewalks has very few public utilities and commercial services, the infrastructure is old, outdated and degraded. The general landscape in this area is also not attractive, many spontaneous service and parking spots cause unsightliness. The Youth Palace (located by the lake) is old, its form and function are no longer suitable for the present.

Hai Ba Trung District hopes that after being redesigned, the space around Thien Quang Lake will become a landscape cluster, an attractive destination of Hanoi. This area will also become a place for entertainment, shopping, improving the lives of residents in the area, and a center connecting with the surrounding area.

Concerns about concreting around the lake

Speaking to VietNamNet reporter, architect Ngo Doan Duc, former Vice President of the Vietnam Association of Architects, said that planning and redesigning the landscape around Thien Quang Lake is the right direction. However, Hai Ba Trung district needs to be careful with the construction solutions and materials around the lake.

Thanh Nien Palace is located on the shore of Thien Quang Lake and has been abandoned for many years.

According to Mr. Ngo Doan Duc, the area around Thien Quang Lake does not necessarily need 5 squares as currently designed. “This area only needs a square large enough to serve people for entertainment, recreation, and cultural events. If 5 squares are made, Thien Quang Lake will not have a highlight, and the landscape will be fragmented,” the architect said.

The former Vice President of the Vietnam Association of Architects said that Hai Ba Trung district should dedicate most of the area around Thien Quang lake to flower gardens and green trees. “Due to the lack of trees and lakes, people in the capital always feel suffocated. Therefore, in the process of renovating Thien Quang lake, Hai Ba Trung district must pay special attention to not building too many structures, turning stone and concrete around the lake,” emphasized architect Ngo Doan Duc.

In particular, Mr. Ngo Doan Duc said that the current Thanh Nien Palace is a large concrete block, affecting the architectural landscape of Thien Quang Lake. Therefore, this architect believes that Hanoi and Hai Ba Trung District need to remove Thanh Nien Palace to turn this area into a flower garden, green trees, and a playground for the people.

Architect Tran Huy Anh, Standing Member of the Hanoi Architects Association, said that the renovation of Thien Quang Lake is a good opportunity for Hanoi City as well as Hai Ba Trung District to deal with land encroachment, collapsed houses and especially the Youth Palace that has been abandoned for many years.

“Creating a new, modern landscape, connecting with the walking street around Thien Quang Lake and Thong Nhat Park has been my personal wish, as well as the wishes of the people of the capital for many years,” said Mr. Tran Huy Anh.

However, according to architect Tran Huy Anh, the urban space design project around Thien Quang Lake still has many trivial details, not worthy of being the cultural and social center of Hai Ba Trung district.

Experts want Hanoi to demolish constructions that affect the space of Thien Quang Lake.

“This is a very valuable green space for Hai Ba Trung district as well as Hanoi. Therefore, the renovation of Thien Quang lake space needs to limit construction works and increase flower gardens and trees to improve the quality of life for the people,” noted architect Tran Huy Anh.

According to Mr. Tran Huy Anh, Hai Ba Trung district should consider the entire Thien Quang lake area as one large square, not divide it into five squares as it is now.

“We need more green space in the inner city, not too many squares paved with stone and built with concrete and steel structures around the lake,” Mr. Tran Huy Anh added.
