The contract between the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) and Mr. Choi Won-kwon was signed today (May 9) at the VFF headquarters ( Hanoi ). The decision to select Mr. Choi Won-kwon as assistant head coach of the U.23 team and the Vietnam national team was made at the proposal of the new head coach Kim Sang-sik. This move is also part of the personnel organization plan for the coaching staff of the U.23 team and the Vietnam national team, aiming to prepare for upcoming tasks. Accordingly, in addition to signing a contract with assistant coach Choi Won-kwon, the VFF will also select and introduce Vietnamese assistant coaches to best support head coach Kim Sang-sik in his professional work at the U.23 team and the Vietnam national team.

Mr. Choi Won-kwon, 43 years old this year (born in 1981), played for the Korean U.23 team that reached the quarter-finals of the 2004 Athens Olympics and played for a number of clubs in the K-League such as FC Seoul, Gwangju, Jeju United, Gyeongju and Daegu FC. After retiring, Mr. Choi Won-kwon moved to coach at Daegu FC as an assistant in 2016, before taking on the position of head coach of this club from November 2022 until the end of his contract in April 2024. Possessing many similarities in tactical operations with coach Kim Sang-sik, Mr. Choi Won-kwon is expected to become a powerful "right-hand man" for the new head coach of the U.23 team and the Vietnam national team.
After taking over the task and following the assignment of head coach Kim Sang-sik, Mr. Choi Won-kwon will directly attend the matches in the V-League. Mr. Kim and Mr. Choi will coordinate to select the force for the Vietnam team, preparing for the FIFA Days gathering in June, including the last 2 matches in the 2nd qualifying round of the 2026 World Cup in Asia (against the Philippines and Iraq respectively).
