The first season of the Ho Chi Minh City International Film Festival (HIFF 2024) is currently underway, attracting the attention of film fans. The festival has three main award categories: Southeast Asian Film (most important), First Film and Short Film.
However, the low presence of Vietnamese films is a big question mark for many people. Especially in the most important category of Southeast Asian films, there is no Vietnamese work competing.
At the regular press conference for the first quarter of 2024 held by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MCST) on the morning of April 11, Director of the Cinema Department Vi Kien Thanh said that the International Film Festival will mainly prioritize films from other countries. If it is the Vietnamese Film Festival, then it will be entirely Vietnamese films competing.
The Director of the Department of Cinema added that the Ho Chi Minh City International Film Festival is divided into two categories: short films and feature films.
Accordingly, the film Au O Vi Dau by director Le Binh Giang was selected in the Southeast Asian Film category (most important). However, because it was not licensed and had some violations of cinema law, the film was not nominated.
In addition, in the short film category, Vietnamese films have 3 works: Eight Horses Chasing the Wind, At the End of the Bed, There's a Call , and Good Night, My Love.
"With the rules of an international film festival, each country is only allowed to participate with a few films for equality. We cannot use the reason of being the host country to participate with many films. With such a number of Vietnamese films competing, I think it is reasonable," said the Director of the Department of Cinema.
Ho Chi Minh City International Film Festival (HIFF) was held for the first time.
In addition, Director of the Department of Cinema Vi Kien Thanh also added that Vietnam currently has 3 international film festivals. They are the Hanoi International Film Festival, the Ho Chi Minh City International Film Festival and the Asian Film Festival in Da Nang.
"According to the 2022 Cinema Law, we allow localities to organize film festivals. With the aim of openness, creating many playgrounds for domestic and foreign artists to exchange and compete. Therefore, the information that the Ho Chi Minh City International Film Festival violates the law is incorrect," he affirmed.
Director Ly Hai is one of 14 media ambassadors of the first Ho Chi Minh City International Film Festival (HIFF).
The Ho Chi Minh City International Film Festival (HIFF 2024) will take place over 8 days (from April 6 to April 13) with 60 films screened at all cinemas. In addition, the festival will also feature film script project fairs, business connections of the Foreign Film Buyers and Distributors Association, film exhibitions, new film premieres, film crew exchanges, etc.
In addition, the Film Festival also organizes cinema-related seminars, thereby connecting filmmakers and cinema-loving audiences. The Film Festival has received more than 400 films, 56 projects participating in the Project Market and 87 scripts participating in the VietScript Lab.
