Earth Hour is an initiative of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) to raise public awareness about energy saving, environmental protection and climate change worldwide. Earth Hour is launched annually on the last Saturday of March. This event is an activity in which electrical appliances are turned off for 60 minutes. This is the 15th year that the Earth Hour Campaign has been carried out in Vietnam.
Representatives of agencies and businesses in the province participated in responding to Earth Hour 2023.
In Thanh Hoa province, Earth Hour was first held in 2013. Over the past 11 years, this annual activity has conveyed a message calling on all organizations, individuals, families, and businesses to join in the fight against climate change, through specific, practical actions such as turning off lights and unnecessary electrical equipment to save energy. Not only turning off the lights for one hour, the Earth Hour campaign hopes to promote electricity saving to protect the environment and build the future.
In 2023, Earth Hour will be held with the theme “Saving electricity - making it a habit”. With this message, the organizers hope that all people, communities and businesses in the province will join hands to protect the environment, save energy, save electricity, towards a green future and sustainable development.
In order to convey and spread the message "Saving electricity - becoming a habit" to a large number of people in the province, during the response to the Earth Hour Campaign 2023, the Center for Industrial Promotion and Energy Conservation, under the Department of Industry and Trade of Thanh Hoa, coordinated with media units to produce and broadcast a propaganda film about Earth Hour, produce and broadcast a report: "Saving electricity - becoming a habit". The Center hung banners responding to the Earth Hour Campaign on the main streets of Thanh Hoa City. Along with that, the Center coordinated with the People's Committees of districts, towns and cities to organize activities responding to the "Earth Hour" Campaign 2023 to communes, wards, agencies, businesses and people in forms such as: hanging banners, propaganda on mass media. Call for everyone to turn off unnecessary lights and electrical equipment during the "Earth Hour" event, with the goal of creating positive changes from awareness to action in using energy economically and efficiently.
During the implementation of the Earth Hour Campaign in 2023, the center coordinated with relevant units to turn off public lighting equipment on a number of roads and parks in Thanh Hoa City. Departments, branches, sectors and localities in the province also participated in the campaign and turned off all lights at the agency's headquarters during Earth Hour. Shopping malls and supermarkets also responded to the "Earth Hour" campaign by turning off signboards, advertising lights and lights in unnecessary areas.
Along with conveying the message "Saving electricity - becoming a habit" of the Earth Hour Campaign in 2023, through propaganda work, the Provincial Center for Industrial Promotion and Energy Conservation also calls on people in the province to carry out the following 10 practical and environmentally friendly actions right now, including: Limit the number of times the refrigerator door is opened and the time it is opened, make full use of available natural light, set a reasonable air conditioner temperature, watch 1 TV together, limit turning on multiple TVs at the same time, choose energy-saving devices to use, limit single-use plastic bags, unplug electrical outlets when leaving the house or at night, turn off the motorbike engine when the traffic light is longer than 16 seconds, throw garbage in the right place and maintain public hygiene and actively plant trees when possible - at home, at work and where you travel.
Through the Earth Hour Campaign in 2023, the whole province has saved 65,000 kWh of electricity. More importantly, the transmission of the message "Saving electricity - becoming a habit" has contributed to changing awareness, creating saving habits for people when using electricity.
