A German aerospace engineer on January 24 celebrated setting a world record for the longest time spent underwater without decompression.
German aerospace engineer Rudiger Koch, 59, lived in an underwater spacecraft capsule off the coast of Panama for 120 days, according to AFP. He emerged from his 30-square- meter underwater capsule in front of Guinness World Records judge Susana Reyes.
Ms Reyes confirmed that Mr Koch had broken the previous record held by American Joseph Dituri, who spent 100 days in an underwater lodge in Florida.
"It was a great adventure and now it's over, there's a real sense of regret. I enjoyed my time here," Koch told AFP after leaving the ship's hold at a depth of 11 metres (36 feet) under the sea.
"It's amazing when everything calms down, it gets dark and the sea lights up. It's indescribable, you have to experience it yourself," Mr. Koch said of the sea view through the ship's windows.
Mr. Koch's cabin has most of the amenities of modern life, such as a bed, toilet, television, computer and internet, and even an exercise bike.
Located about 15 minutes by boat off the northern coast of Panama, Mr. Koch's cabin is connected to another cabin above water by a tube containing a narrow spiral staircase, providing access for food deliveries as well as for visitors, including doctors.
Solar panels on the surface provide electricity. Mr. Koch's submarine has a backup generator, but no shower.
Mr Koch told an AFP reporter during a visit that he hopes his underwater existence will change the way we think about human life and where we might settle, even permanently.
“What we are trying to do here is demonstrate that the sea is indeed a viable environment for human development,” Mr. Koch stressed.
Up to four cameras filmed Koch's movements in the submarine, recording his daily life, monitoring his mental health and providing evidence that he never surfaced.
"We needed witnesses to monitor and verify 24/7 for more than 120 days," Ms Reyes told AFP of monitoring Mr Koch while he was underwater.
