Foreign HR management experience of FPT alumni

VnExpressVnExpress14/08/2023

Nguyen Viet Phuc, 35 years old, said that when working in a host country, you need to adapt, especially cultural factors, so that you don't accidentally become an ignorant person.

Phuc is currently a senior project manager for a large technology company - a partner of FPT Software Korea. He has about 500 employees under him. Before working in Korea, the FPT University alumni spent a long time managing projects at many Singaporean companies. Therefore, Phuc has a lot of experience, which has been summarized into experience in human resource management and operating large projects in the field of information technology.

There are at least four skills you need to equip yourself with if you want to integrate into the global IT industry, which are expertise, international IT certification, soft skills, and foreign languages combined with cultural understanding, Phuc emphasized.

Regarding expertise, according to Mr. Phuc, all IT majors have opportunities to find global jobs. The important thing is that students must be passionate, enjoy studying their chosen major, and must spend time investing in that subject. "There is no redundant subject in the IT field. In particular, you need to be good at a specialized field in parallel with basic knowledge and industry trends," he said.

Second are international certificates. Having had a lot of experience in recruitment, he realized that many students only care about studying and forget that to integrate globally, they also need relevant international certificates. "Holding an international certificate in hand, when applying to global companies, you will feel more secure, the company will also trust you more, making the interview process easier," the manager commented.

Phuc admitted that he did not study this thoroughly as a student, so he just figured it out step by step. However, after only a short time in Singapore, he had equipped himself with all the necessary certificates.

Another important factor is soft skills. As a former student at FPT University, Mr. Phuc said that the school trains students very well in soft skills, so most graduates have the ability to communicate, work in groups, and integrate quickly.

Foreign languages are also a strength of FPT University, as the school equips students from the very first days in the classroom and during the learning process uses 100% imported textbooks in English. I almost only learned English when I entered university. "Fortunately, during the 4 years, the school has thoroughly equipped students with two languages, English and Japanese, so right from my final year of university, I had the opportunity to work in Singapore," he added.

However, the 8x guy revealed that learning a language needs to be closely linked to the local culture, and he needs to orient himself to which country he will go to in order to focus on learning the foreign language and culture of that country to be more effective and progress faster.

For example, if you want to work in Singapore, you need to know that this country speaks two common languages, Chinese and English, and they often speak a mixture of the two languages, so it will be difficult to adapt at first. Next is the working style. If you work in Singapore in a small group of 20 people but they come from 7-8 different countries, you need to pay attention to the issue of religion.

When inviting the group out to eat, I always have to be mindful of cultural differences, such as Muslims not eating pork, while Hindus do not eat beef. Neutral dishes such as fish and seafood are often the top priority, the manager gave an example. The culture of queuing is also a point to note when coming to the lion island, they can wait for several hours just to buy a bowl of noodles for a few dollars.

Or in Korea, the culture of "ppalli" (hurry up) is also something to note, as in Korea there is a culture of living immediately, living in a hurry, everything is done immediately. Koreans also avoid being late. They always put speed and efficiency first. Normal things like greeting, drinking... also have their own characteristics that need to be understood.

"Once you get through the first stage, you will gradually get used to it and adapt," said Mr. Phuc.

With many years of experience as a manager for global companies, Mr. Phuc highly values candidates with passion, capacity, high adaptability, and quick change. The manager also commented that FPT University students after graduation are increasingly appreciated domestically and internationally, and the approval of working visas in some countries for graduates of this school is also much simpler than other schools in Vietnam. In addition, FPT Software also cooperates with foreign branches such as FPT Korea to have specialized training programs for FPT University students, so they have a great opportunity to go global (go to the world market) during and immediately after graduation.
