Lien Khuong becomes the first international airport in the Central Highlands region.

On May 17, 2024, the Ministry of Transport approved the Lien Khuong Airport Planning for the 2021-2030 period, with a vision to 2050.

The plan aims to make Lien Khuong a 4E-class airport - the highest level in Vietnam today - by 2030, with a capacity to serve 5 million passengers and 20,000 tons of cargo per year.

By 2050, the airport's capacity is expected to be increased to 7 million passengers and 30,000 tons of cargo per year.

In the 2021-2030 period, the airport will maintain the T1 passenger terminal with a capacity of 2 million passengers/year and plan a new T2 passenger terminal with a capacity of about 3 million passengers/year.

By 2050, passenger terminal T2 will be expanded to bring the total capacity of the entire port to about 7 million passengers/year, with land reserved for development when needed.

Lien Khuong Airport, about 28 km from Da Lat City, was started construction and operated under French management in 1933, named Lien Khanh Airport.

More than 20 years later, the US took over the airport and repaired and upgraded it for the first time, along with changing the name to Lien Khuong airport.

From April 30, 1975 to 1980, the airport was taken over and operated by the Vietnam People's Army.

From 1981-1985, the airport operated passenger transport services on the Ho Chi Minh City - Lien Khuong route with a frequency of 1 flight/week using AK40 aircraft.

Since 1992, the airport has resumed passenger transport services. In addition to the Ho Chi Minh City - Lien Khuong route, during this period, Lien Khuong - Hue and vice versa were also opened. The aircraft used was the AK40 and was later replaced by the ATR.72.

On September 2, 2003, the project "Renovation, expansion, upgrading of HCC road, taxiway, aircraft parking lot - Lien Khuong airport" was started to ensure the exploitation of medium-range civil aircraft such as A320, A321 and equivalent; meeting level 4C standards and level 2 military airport.

Since 2018, the airport has been operating at a design capacity of around 2 million passengers/year. In 2023, it has reached a capacity of more than 2.5 million passengers and is expected to reach the same output or exceed that of 2023 in 2024 .
