On the morning of December 27, Captain Ho Toan Thanh, deputy head of the Economic and Official Crime Investigation Police Team of Hue City Police, said that the unit had consulted and proposed to superiors to administratively fine the owner of the facility that grew bean sprouts using toxic chemicals with the amount of 45 million VND.
Previously, Hue City Police discovered a business using growth stimulants to grow bean sprouts at 7/1/56 Duy Tan, An Cuu Ward, Hue City, owned by Mr. Le Thanh Vu (67 years old).
Police explain why they did not prosecute the case of growing bean sprouts with toxic chemicals in Hue
Mr. Vu said the chemical he used to grow bean sprouts was 6-Benzylaminopurine (a growth stimulant) purchased in Ho Chi Minh City.
This facility uses the above chemical to mix with water to irrigate the bean sprouts, stimulating the bean sprouts to develop blisters, shorten roots, and then sell them to the Hue City market.
According to the police, this chemical is not allowed to be used in food production, because when used in the human body it can cause acute poisoning, harming the health of consumers such as skin burns, conjunctivitis if in direct contact.
Upon inspection, the police discovered that the facility owned by Mr. Vu was growing 750kg of jackfruit that was about to be sold on the market. The police sealed it and sent samples for testing to serve as a basis for handling the case.
Captain Thanh said that after receiving the results of the sample examination, based on current regulations, the unit only advised the superiors to issue a decision to administratively fine Mr. Le Thanh Vu's facility 45 million VND, suspend production at this facility for 2 months and destroy all of the above mentioned goods.
"Although the price is up to 750kg, the market price is only 8,000 VND/kg (about 6 million VND - PV), not enough 10 million VND, so it is not enough to prosecute the case. If the owner of the facility commits a repeat offense, we will prosecute according to regulations," said Mr. Thanh.
Previously, the police of Quang Ngai and Dak Lak provinces also discovered facilities growing bean sprouts using the chemical 6-Benzylaminopurine and prosecuted the owners of these facilities.
