Ms. Hua Thi Nen's family in Buon Choah commune, Krong No district has been growing rice for decades. However, since becoming a member of the Buon Choah Agricultural Cooperative, she has really changed her production mindset.

Ms. Hua Thi Nen (left) in Buon Choah commune, Krong No district is one of the first farmers in Dak Nong to grow VietGAP rice thanks to participating in the Cooperative.

Ms. Nen is one of the first people to produce VietGAP certified ST24 and ST25 rice. These are high quality rice varieties, creating specialty rice in Dak Nong.

Ms. Nên said that in 2020, Buôn Choáh Agricultural Cooperative was established as a member. At that time, the local government promoted it so she understood the role of the cooperative in helping farmers develop production and improve economic efficiency. "When joining the cooperative, we were instructed on VietGAP rice production techniques. Growing ST24 and ST25 rice is considered by the world to be the best quality rice in the world, helping us sell at high prices," Ms. Nên shared.

Buon Choah is a fairly favorable land for rice cultivation, farmers can produce 2 crops per year. Farmers are trained in techniques by cooperatives and grow high-quality rice varieties, so economic efficiency is much higher.

With 1.5 hectares of ST24 and ST25 rice, Ms. Nen's family harvests 15-18 tons of fresh rice each crop. "The recent high rice prices have helped the family develop its economy. Recently, the family sold fresh rice for 10,500 VND/kg, after deducting expenses, the profit is about 60 million VND/ha," Ms. Nen said.

From the economic efficiency of her family, Ms. Nen and the cooperative have shared their experience of growing VietGAP rice with many farmers. Up to now, farmers who have become members of cooperatives have clearly seen that participating in the collective economy is the right direction.

Ms. Bui Thi Tuyen, Buon Choah commune, said that in the past, she grew low-yield rice varieties, only about 1-2 tons/ha, so she only used them for family use and raised chickens and ducks to improve meals.

Since becoming a member of the Buôn Choáh Agricultural Cooperative, she has switched to large-scale, systematic rice production. The Cooperative has a production plan right from the beginning of the crop season. The Cooperative has invested in machinery, so it mobilizes people to prepare the land, sow, weed, and harvest rice according to a specific schedule for each area, thus preventing pests and diseases and increasing productivity.

Buôn Choáh Agricultural Cooperative currently has 304 households as members, with a total rice area meeting VietGAP standards of over 440 hectares. Mr. Pham Xuan Lai, Deputy Director of the Cooperative, said that to have the current area of specialty rice, the Cooperative had to build a model, then learn from the experience and then share it with the people.

During the production process, the cooperative thoroughly trained farmers on techniques and bought rice at high prices, while finding stable outlets for the products. “In previous years, after 3 months of planting, rice farmers earned a profit of about 30-40 million VND/ha after deducting expenses. This year, the price of fresh rice has increased, with profits reaching 50-60 million VND/ha, so farmers are very excited,” said Mr. Pham Xuan Lai.

Buôn Choáh Commune is considered the rice granary of Dak Nong. The area of rice cultivation here is up to 700 hectares per crop. In the commune, there are currently 2 cooperatives attracting over 400 rice farmers to become members.

Cooperatives guide farmers to grow specialty rice and provide technical guidance, which has improved economic efficiency for many farming households. Up to now, all rice fields are produced according to standards and are certified by VietGAP.

Cooperative attracts nearly 18,000 farmers

Dak Nong currently has 177 cooperatives operating in the agricultural sector. Currently, cooperatives do not only produce but also invest in processing to improve economic efficiency and product value. This is also an increasingly attractive plus point, attracting many farmers to participate in the collective economy.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Tot, a member of the Bechamp Dak Nong Organic Agricultural Cooperative in Truong Xuan Commune, Dak Song District, has 3 hectares of coffee. Ms. Tot said that she has been growing coffee for 20 years but never thought of making organic fertilizers and pesticides to serve the purpose of growing organic coffee. She did not think of roasting, grinding, or tasting this agricultural product. However, when she became a member of the cooperative, she grasped all of the above knowledge.

She was instructed by the cooperative on composting techniques and biological pesticides from agricultural by-products. The cooperative arranged for members to learn techniques for roasting, grinding, processing and brewing coffee, etc.

"I never thought of these things before and they help increase my family's income significantly. Now, I am not just a farmer who only knows how to grow crops, but I have also become an agricultural processing technician for the cooperative," Ms. Tot shared.

Bechamp Dak Nong Organic Agricultural Cooperative, like many other cooperatives in Dak Nong, has now implemented closed production and attracted many farmers. Farmers' agricultural products purchased by the cooperative have created favorable output, without being forced to lower prices, even much higher than the market.

Dak Nong currently has 294 cooperatives and 181 cooperative groups operating in the agricultural and non-agricultural sectors. The cooperatives have a total charter capital of over VND338 billion, attracting nearly 18,000 farmers to become members and associate members and creating jobs for over 8,200 workers.

In recent years, the collective economy has contributed to promoting the development of agriculture, farmers and rural areas. With that importance, Dak Nong is promoting the dissemination of policies on collective economic development.

Mr. Nguyen Khai, Chairman of Dak Nong Cooperative Union, said that the unit is coordinating with departments, branches, districts and cities to promote the propaganda of the Party and State's policies on collective economic development.

In Dak Nong, more and more farmers want to participate in the collective economy to develop the economy. The collective economy increasingly demonstrates its mission and role in leading farmers, agriculture, and rural areas.

Mr. Le Trong Yen, Member of the Provincial Party Committee, Vice Chairman of Dak Nong Provincial People's Committee, assessed: Dak Nong is an agricultural province, with up to 70% of farmers. Farmers' lives mainly depend on agricultural production.

In recent times, many districts and cities have had effective production cooperatives. Cooperatives have organized production, purchased agricultural products, and deeply processed agricultural products. Many cooperatives have applied high technology and organic production, creating high-quality products that have been well-regarded by domestic and international markets, contributing to improving the economy of farmers.

Dak Nong is implementing Action Program No. 54-CTr/TU on continuing to innovate, develop and improve the efficiency of the collective economy in the new period. The Provincial People's Committee issued Plan No. 272 on implementing the Project of the Vietnam Farmers' Association participating in the development of the collective economy in agriculture until 2030 in Dak Nong province. These are important premises for the collective economy to develop more strongly.

Dak Nong aims to have about 300 cooperatives with over 4,200 members by 2030; 360 cooperatives with 17,000 members. By 2045, Dak Nong will attract at least 20% of the population to participate in collective economic organizations; ensure over 90% of units operate effectively, of which at least 75% participate in the chain.
