The historical monument of the 1953 sweep in Cam Nhuong commune (Cam Xuyen, Ha Tinh) was built to commemorate 20 martyrs and 83 Nhuong Ban people killed by colonial invaders in 1953.
On the morning of September 10, the People's Committee of Cam Nhuong commune held the inauguration ceremony of the historical monument of the 1953 raid. Chairman of the Vietnam Association of the Elderly Nguyen Thanh Binh and leaders of Cam Xuyen district also attended. |
Cam Nhuong Commune (formerly called Nhuong Ban) is the land associated with Ky La estuary in the past and Cua Nhuong today.
During the resistance against French colonialism from 1945 to 1954, Nhuong Ban was fiercely attacked by the enemy. In early 1953, French colonialists sent planes to continuously attack traffic routes, economic facilities and residential areas in Ha Tinh. In particular, French colonialists sent troops to raid coastal and border communes in the West.

In the early morning of September 4, 1953 (July 27, Quy Ty year), the French colonialists used 2 companies of European-African soldiers and puppet soldiers, equipped with infantry guns, landed by sea with 4 medium-sized warships and 10 canoes, with aircraft and artillery support to conduct a sweep operation into Nhuong Ban. In this anti-sweep battle, 20 cadres, militia and guerrillas were sacrificed, 83 people of Nhuong Ban commune were killed by the enemy.

Since then, the 27th day of the 7th lunar month every year has become the common death anniversary of the 103 people of Nhuong Ban who died. At the site of Con Mom (now Xuan Nam village, Cam Nhuong commune), in the late 50s of the last century, local people built a historical stele to witness the 1953 sweep.
Later, the land of Con Mom was assigned by the State to the Cam Xuyen District Aquatic Products Enterprise to produce and process fish sauce. The stele was located within the premises of the enterprise, so it was not convenient for people to come and offer incense, and was later destroyed.
According to the wishes of the local people, on March 17, 2023, Cam Nhuong commune started to rebuild the memorial house. The project has a total investment of more than 1.1 billion VND, mobilized from socialized sources. After 6 months of construction, the memorial house project has been completed, becoming a spiritual address, commemorating the martyrs and people who fell in the 1953 raid.
