Khanh Hoa Provincial People's Committee has just sent a document to Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, Department of Justice, Department of Science and Technology of Ho Chi Minh City requesting support in testing water samples to serve the investigation.
According to the document, recently in Nha Trang (Khanh Hoa province) there was a mass poisoning of more than 360 people.
At the request of the Investigation Police Agency, Nha Trang Police, to facilitate the unit to collect documents and investigate and resolve the case, Khanh Hoa Provincial People's Committee requested Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee and the two departments to direct the Ho Chi Minh City Laboratory Analysis Service Center to conduct water sample testing according to the decision requesting appraisal of the Investigation Police Agency of Nha Trang Police.
Previously, after eating chicken rice at a restaurant on Ba Trieu Street, Nha Trang, a series of people with symptoms of food poisoning were taken to the hospital for treatment. The Khanh Hoa Department of Health issued an official dispatch to coordinate in finding the cause.
According to the report, at 8:30 p.m. on March 12, Nha Trang City Medical Center received a report of a number of cases hospitalized with suspected food poisoning symptoms due to eating chicken rice. Immediately upon receiving the report, the city's Food Poisoning Investigation Team went to investigate at the hospitals where the patients were hospitalized.
The patient had symptoms of abdominal pain, nausea, loose stools, fever, and fatigue. The cause of the poisoning is still unknown.
On March 18, the Pasteur Institute of Nha Trang announced the results of food sample testing in the mass poisoning case after eating at Tram Anh chicken rice restaurant, Nha Trang city (Khanh Hoa). The Pasteur Institute said the test results showed 3 bacteria causing the disease.
Through testing food samples, hand samples, water samples, and clinical samples, the institute determined that: fried onion samples were positive for Salmonella spp.; vegetables (pickles) were positive for Bacillus cereus; and hand samples of patient Le Thi Bich Lan (36 years old) were positive for Staphylococcus aureus.
The remaining chicken rice sample (rice with egg sauce and shredded chicken rice) purchased at a patient's household at 5:00 p.m. on March 12 was positive for Salmonella spp., Bacillus cereus bacteria that produce NHE (Non-haemolytic enterotoxin) and HBL (Hemolysin BL).
Mr. Trinh Ngoc Hiep - Deputy Director of Khanh Hoa Department of Health - said that the results of Nha Trang Pasteur Institute clearly identifying the types of bacteria will help facilitate treatment. After clearly identifying the cause of the poisoning, the department will coordinate with the City Police and the City People's Committee to carry out the next steps, including handling and punishing.
