With the theme "Wisdom & Technology", the Vietnam Festival of Creativity & Design (VFCD) explores the essential role of design at the intersection of technology and humanity, through discussions, workshops, exhibitions and many other activities.

The event, which opened on November 13 in Ho Chi Minh City, was held with the aim of promoting support for the national strategy on developing cultural industries, including establishing a close relationship between cultural development and the country's socio-economic development.
At the same time, the festival contributes to laying the foundation for establishing a “creative belt” spanning the country through the expansion of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network in Vietnam.
Professor Julia Gaimster, Head of the School of Communication and Design, RMIT University Vietnam, and Head of the festival's Organizing Committee, said that Vietnamese creativity can shine through the use of new technologies to demonstrate the power and potential of human intelligence.
“We hope this year’s festival will spark curiosity, imagination and critical thinking about the role of technology and related tools in our future, as well as inspire people to hone new skills, explore new opportunities and connect with other innovative individuals and organisations locally and internationally,” she said.
One of the highlights of the fifth season of VFCD is the exhibition "Intelligence & Technology" taking place throughout the festival in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi.

According to the Organizing Committee, since the first industrial revolution in the 19th century, technology and machines have dominated every aspect of life and fundamentally changed the way society works. Artificial intelligence (AI) is now capable of learning, synthesizing information, analyzing and providing answers beyond what it was programmed to do.
Humans create machines and develop them by imitating themselves. So how do humans advance as machines upgrade? What are the capabilities of advanced machines in human hands?
More than 10 researchers, artists, and artist groups will provide answers to the above questions in the form of physical, digital, or interactive works using new technologies (AR, VR, AI) at the exhibition “Intelligence & Technology”.
The festival week in Ho Chi Minh City also includes other outstanding events such as: Dialogue "Can AI replace creative people?" (November 16); Workshop "Vietnam's advertising industry: creating a unique identity" (November 17); Workshop "Future heritage: creating heritage through design and spatial mapping" (November 18); Full Play Day - a series of events for game creators (November 18).
During the VFCD opening ceremony, representatives of the Australian Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City, RMIT University, VICAS and Vietnam Design Week also presented the “Emerging Design Talent Awards” to four young Vietnamese talents.
This is part of the multicultural art and design project here/there launched within the framework of VFCD 2021, bringing together Australian and Vietnamese designers and artists.
Through this project, emerging artists from Vietnam have been mentored and guided to promote contemporary designs, crafts and art practices, while preserving traditional art forms.

The project received support from the Australian Embassy in Vietnam as part of activities to celebrate 50 years of Vietnam-Australia diplomatic relations.
“This year we celebrate the 5th anniversary of the festival and 50 years of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Australia. This 50th anniversary is a testament to the friendship and partnership that has been built over many decades. VFCD highlights the cultural cooperation between our two countries and celebrates the opportunities that creative partnerships can create,” said Professor Julia Gaimster.
The fifth annual Vietnam Festival of Creativity & Design (VFCD) will feature a range of exciting activities taking place in Ho Chi Minh City from November 13-19 and in Hanoi from December 1-7. Initiated in 2019, the event is co-organized by RMIT University Vietnam, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the Vietnam National Institute of Culture and Arts Studies (VICAS) and partners in the creative sector, with media sponsorship and organizational advice from Hanoi Grapevine. Over the past five years, the festival has created an open and interactive platform for individuals and organizations to keep up with the latest trends in the creative field. |
