On his return trip to Da Lat, the Western guest decided to enjoy a family meal with many traditional delicacies such as braised chicken, bean with tomato sauce, anchovies braised in fish sauce,...
Max McFarlin (from Arkansas, USA) is a famous YouTuber in Vietnam with a personal channel of more than 715,000 followers. He regularly posts videos about culinary experiences in provinces and cities across Vietnam.
In a video posted on YouTube, sharing about his return to Da Lat, Max introduced a "favorite" restaurant located on Phu Dong Thien Vuong Street, specializing in serving family meals with many traditional dishes.
The Western guest said that home-cooked meals (similar to regular meals or set meals) are one of the dishes he especially loves since moving to Vietnam.
Diners are served rice separately, and side dishes can be chosen according to their preferences. “It would be a waste to come to Vietnam without eating this dish,” Max described.
The American YouTuber revealed that he used to live in Da Lat for a while, so he often visited this restaurant 3-4 times a week. Not only was he satisfied with the taste of the food here, he was also impressed by the friendliness and enthusiasm of the restaurant owner.
“I love this kind of rice and I don't think it's better anywhere else,” Max said.
This time, Max came to the restaurant quite early so he had the opportunity to observe the owner preparing the menu with about 20 different dishes such as: Mackerel with sauce, tofu stuffed with meat in tomato sauce, shrimp fried meat, anchovies braised in fish sauce, chicken braised with ginger, braised meat with eggs, sweet and sour ribs, bitter melon stuffed with meat, etc.
When the hot food was served, arranged and divided into full trays, he was surprised and admitted that he did not know what to choose because the menu was so diverse and attractive.
After looking around for a while, the Western guest decided to order his favorite dishes including braised anchovies, mackerel in tomato sauce, bean sauce, braised chicken, stir-fried ribs, boiled pork belly and sour soup.
Max shared that he was quite impressed with the way the restaurant served. For some dishes that needed to be enjoyed hot, the chef used a clay pot to keep the heat longer.
Not only is the dish delicious, the American YouTuber also enjoys being able to choose pickles to go with it and try different dipping sauces such as shrimp paste, fish sauce, and chili garlic sauce.
He could not hide his excitement and immediately enjoyed the dishes one by one. He commented that the boiled meat with shrimp paste was delicious, and could be eaten with pickles, herbs or eggplant, all of which were appealing.
Braised anchovies is his favourite dish, always chewing the bones. He praised the anchovies for their rich, fatty taste from the sugar and fish sauce, and the fact that they were braised with pork belly and chili made them even more delicious.
"Braised anchovies is a dish that many diners who come here don't want to leave after eating," the Western guest added.
With tomato sauce tofu, Max thinks this dish looks easy to make but requires skillful preparation, so that the crust is crispy but the inside is soft, melting in the mouth.
The young YouTuber also highly appreciated the mackerel with sauce and sweet and sour ribs. The fish is lightly fried before being sauced, so the meat is crispy, firm and has an attractive color, while the ribs are rich, tender and delicious when eaten with rice.
“Here, they make delicious dishes. Many people cook fish that is dry, but the fish here is crispy, delicious, sweet and not dry,” he commented.
At the end of the meal, Max admitted that the dishes were all delicious and served in abundance, so much so that he was so full that he could not finish all the food on the table.
When paying the bill, the owner enthusiastically asked about the situation and reduced the price, making the Western customer even more touched. “That’s why this place is called family meal because it feels warm like a real family,” Max said.
