Ukraine's ST-68 radar destroyed after precision strike
On August 1, SF reported that the Russian military destroyed a Soviet-made ST-68 airborne surveillance radar of Kiev forces in Nikolaev. In this attack, the Russian military used Kh-35 cruise missiles.
Video footage of the attack appeared in the media on August 1. The ST-68 radar, deployed by the Ukrainian Armed Forces near the settlement of Polyana, was directly hit by Russian forces using Kh-35 cruise missiles. The attack destroyed the radar as well as its command vehicle and generator. Russian media reported that about 25 Ukrainian soldiers were also killed or injured in the attack.

The ST-68 is a 3D airborne surveillance radar with a range of up to 150km. It can be used with Soviet-made air defense systems such as the S-300.
The Kh-35 is an anti-ship cruise missile. The latest version of the missile is equipped with a GLONASS-supported inertial navigation system along with an active radar seeker. It has a range of up to 260km and can fly at an altitude of just 4m above the ground to avoid detection.
The missile can be launched from the air by fighter aircraft such as the Su-34 bomber, from land using the Bal multi-purpose launch system or from sea from warships using systems such as the KT-184 launcher.
In recent months, the Russian military has increasingly used the Kh-35 missile to attack Ukrainian radars and air defense systems. The Kh-35’s high accuracy, long range, stealth, and ability to launch from multiple locations (air, land, or sea) make it perfect for operations that limit enemy air defenses.
Three Patriot systems of Ukrainian forces were attacked by Russian airstrikes
On August 1, RT reported that Moscow said the Russian military had carried out successful attacks on three US-made Patriot air defense systems in Ukraine.
The weapons were targeted by Russian fighter jets, drones, missiles and artillery, the Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement on Thursday. Russian officials did not provide details on where the air defense systems were operating, or whether they were completely destroyed or just damaged.
Russian forces also attacked a Ukrainian drone control center and trains carrying ammunition and troops, the Russian Defense Ministry added.
The Patriot system, developed by US defense contractor Raytheon, is hailed as one of the most effective air defense systems in Ukraine's arsenal. Kiev officials have frequently called on the West to provide more of these weapons.
The Patriot air defense system is capable of attacking a variety of targets, including tactical ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and aircraft, at ranges of about 160km and altitudes of up to 24km.
A typical Patriot air defense system consists of several components: radar and control vehicles, a "power plant" truck, and missile launchers. To operate the system at full capacity, Patriot requires about 90 personnel.
The Russian military has claimed to have attacked Patriot air defense systems several times before. The first time was in May 2023, when the Russian Defense Ministry said a Kinzhal hypersonic missile destroyed five Patriot launchers in Kiev. At the time, Washington confirmed the systems had been damaged.
