“There has been a huge spike in violence,” said Daniel Nagin, a professor of public policy and statistics at Carnegie Mellon University. “Some of the cases may be disputes, often between teenagers, but they are fought with guns, not with fists.”

As of Sunday evening (June 18), none of the attacks were considered mass shootings, as fewer than four people were killed at each location. Here is a roundup of the shootings over the weekend:

Illinois

One person was killed and at least 22 people were injured in a shooting early Sunday morning at a suburban Chicago parking lot party.

The DuPage County Sheriff's Office said a "peaceful gathering" to celebrate Juneteenth turned violent in Willowbrook, about 20 miles southwest of Chicago.

The motive for the attack was not immediately clear and as of early afternoon, no one had been arrested.

Washington

Police say two people were killed and two others were injured when a gunman began shooting “at random” into a crowd at a campground in Washington state where people were gathering for a music festival on Saturday night.

The suspect was shot and arrested by police just a few hundred yards from the Beyond Wonderland electronic dance music festival. Organizers later tweeted that Sunday’s concert had been canceled.

Pennsylvania

One soldier was killed and another was seriously injured in central Pennsylvania on Saturday.

A man opened fire near the Lewistown barracks and struck a soldier, who was taken to the hospital with serious injuries, Juniata County police said.

The suspect fled but was found about two hours later. Police said a shootout broke out, in which the shooter was shot dead but another soldier was also seriously injured.

Governor Josh Shapiro said in a social media post that the injured officer was in critical but stable condition.

St Louis

A shooting early Sunday morning at a downtown office building left a 17-year-old boy dead and nine other teenagers injured, St. Louis Police Department Chief Robert Tracy said.

He identified the slain victim as Makao Moore, 17. A spokesman said a juvenile with a handgun was in police custody as a person of interest.

The shooting occurred as several teenagers were holding a party on the office premises. The other victims, aged 15 to 19, suffered multiple gunshot wounds. A 17-year-old girl was trampled as she fled, leaving her with a serious spinal injury.

Southern California

A shooting at a pool party at a home in Southern California left eight people injured, authorities said Saturday.

The victims were between the ages of 16 and 24, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said in a statement. The victims were taken to hospitals, and two are in critical condition.

Authorities said they found another 16-year-old boy inside a vehicle with a gunshot wound after reports of a car crashing into a wall nearby.

Baltimore

Six people were injured in a shooting Friday night in Baltimore.

Police heard gunfire in the north of the city around 9 p.m. and found three men with multiple gunshot wounds. Medics took them to area hospitals for treatment.

Police later discovered three more victims, who had taken themselves to hospital with minor injuries.

Baltimore Police Department spokeswoman Lindsey Eldridge said the injured were between the ages of 17 and 26.
