AFP news agency on June 5 quoted diplomatic sources as saying that Iran will officially reopen its embassy in Saudi Arabia on June 6, after 7 years of closure.
"The inauguration ceremony of the Iranian Embassy will take place on Tuesday (June 6), at 6:00 p.m. local time (10:00 p.m. Vietnam time), in the presence of the newly appointed Iranian Ambassador," the Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman said.
The two countries, representing the two main branches of Islam, severed diplomatic relations in 2016, after the Saudi Arabian Embassy and Consulate in Tehran were attacked during protests against Riyadh's execution of Shiite cleric Nimr al-Nimr .
Previously, Iran appointed Mr. Alireza Enayati as its Ambassador to Saudi Arabia.
Before being appointed as Iran's Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Mr. Enayati served as Assistant Foreign Minister and Director of the Persian Gulf Affairs Department of the Iranian Foreign Ministry.
On March 10, Iran and Saudi Arabia agreed to re-establish diplomatic relations under a deal brokered by China.
The two sides pledged to reopen embassies and representative offices in each country within two months, as well as implement economic and security cooperation agreements signed more than 20 years ago.
This May, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said Riyadh had announced the appointment of an ambassador to Iran./.
