The French National Frequency Regulatory Agency (ANFR) said on September 29 that a software update released by Apple for iPhone 12 smartphones will allow these devices to comply with French radiation exposure limits.
A laboratory commissioned by the agency confirmed that the software update could limit the specific absorption rate (SAR) value to 3.94 W/kg, below the European Union's recommended level of 4 W/kg. SAR is a measure of how much radiofrequency energy emitted by an electronic device is absorbed by the human body. It is one of the main tools used to monitor the health effects of radiation from devices.
In a press release, the agency said that Apple must deploy this software update to all iPhone 12 users to bring the devices into compliance with current standards, adding that this would allow the ban on iPhone 12 smartphones to be lifted in the French market.
Previously, on September 12, ANFR called on Apple to withdraw the iPhone 12 from the French market when it discovered that the device had a SAR of 5.74 W/kg.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), over the past 20 years, scientists have conducted many studies on the risk of radiation from using mobile phones and the results show that the level of radiation from this device "does not adversely affect the health of users".
Apple’s total revenue in Europe reached about $95 billion last year, making Europe its second-largest market after the Americas. Some estimates say Apple sold more than 50 million iPhones in Europe in 2022.
