A few weeks ago, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) began the process of finding a host country for the tournament that will take place in 7 years.
Indonesia has hosted the Asian Cup once before, in 2007. At that time, they co-hosted with Vietnam, Thailand, and Malaysia. The tournament was considered a success as Southeast Asian countries had the honor of hosting the highest quality tournament for the first time. However, this time, Indonesia does not want to host with Vietnam or Thailand. They want to be the only host country.
Indonesia wants to host the 2031 Asian Cup.
“Indonesia is competing to be the sole host of the 2031 Asian Cup. The last time we hosted the event was in 2007 and we did it together with three other Southeast Asian countries. But now we want to be the sole host of this prestigious event. I believe Indonesia has the right to host,” said PSSI President Erick Thohir.
According to this businessman, Indonesia has a lot of experience in organizing major tournaments. Recently, the most populous country in Southeast Asia has organized the FIFA U17 World Cup, so the standards of the stadium and facilities are all up to standard. In addition, the Asian Cup has been held in the Middle East for the last 3 times. The UAE was the host country in 2019, Qatar will host in 2023, and the 2027 tournament will be held in Saudi Arabia.
For this reason, the AFC will consider allowing countries in East Asia, Central Asia or Southeast Asia to host the 2031 Asian Cup. However, it is not clear who Indonesia will have to compete with for the right to host. In Central Asia, Uzbekistan is ready to host major tournaments. In the East, Japan, South Korea or China have more than enough capacity to host the Asian Cup.
The final decision on the host country of the 2031 Asian Cup will only be announced in the next 2-3 years.
