Speaking at the Conference on the situation of the crisis in the Palestinian Gaza Strip, Indonesian President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) called for a ceasefire, saying the situation would not improve without a ceasefire.

“Israel has used the narrative of self-defense and continues to kill civilians. This is nothing more than collective punishment. We must all find a way for Israel to immediately implement a ceasefire,” the head of the Indonesian government stressed.

Mr Jokowi said the world seemed “helpless” as a month passed since the Israeli invasion.

“More than 7.9 billion people in the world, more than 190 world leaders. But so far, no one has been able to stop these crimes. For that reason, the OIC must unite and take the lead to solve this problem,” he said.

According to Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi, the OIC Summit adopted a Resolution with 31 points, a document that most countries agreed was the "strongest-worded resolution" the OIC has ever issued.

In Paragraph 11 of the resolution, the leaders authorized the foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Egypt, Qatar, Turkey, Indonesia and Nigeria to initiate actions – on behalf of the OIC and the Arab League – to stop the war in Gaza and launch a political process to achieve peace, Ms. Retno said.

In a statement on November 12, Ms. Retno said that Paragraph 11 shows the OIC's recognition of Indonesia's positive contribution in trying to resolve the Palestinian issue, especially regarding the recent situation in Gaza.

According to Ms. Retno, during the exchange with President Jokowi on the sidelines of the Conference, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas truly appreciated Indonesia's consistency in supporting the Palestinian struggle, and asked President Jokowi to convey the message to US President Joe Biden during the bilateral talks in Washington on November 13.
