This morning, August 2, Con Co island district, Quang Tri province solemnly held a ceremony to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the district's establishment on October 1 (2004 - 2024) and the 65th anniversary of the Con Co island armed forces' tradition day on August 8 (1959 - 2024).

Glorious feats
Reading a speech at the ceremony, Secretary of the District Party Committee and Chairman of the People's Committee of Con Co Island District, Vo Viet Cuong, said that 65 years ago, on August 8, 1959, Company 6, Regiment 270, Division 341 crossed the ocean to defend Con Co Island with the determination to protect the sacred territorial sovereignty and territorial waters of the Fatherland.
From here, Con Co became the outpost of the Socialist North, the solid rear of the great front line of the South.
The US imperialists concentrated their air force and navy to surround and attack the island, dropping thousands of tons of bombs and ammunition of all kinds on the island, with the plot to level and destroy Con Co Island. For nearly 1,500 days and nights, Con Co lived and fought under the enemy's bombs and bullets.

With nearly 1,000 large and small battles, Con Co soldiers shot down 48 planes and sank 17 American warships. Uncle Ho sent letters of praise three times, sent his portrait and affirmed the great achievements of Con Co officers and soldiers through 2 verses of poetry sent with the letter of praise on June 5, 1968: "Con Co is full of flowers of victory/Fighting to the point of destroying the American invaders".
With those great achievements, Con Co was honored to be awarded the title of Hero of the People's Armed Forces by the Party and State twice; 2 Independence Medals and hundreds of other noble awards.
Building Con Co into a tourist island
In 1998, during his visit and work with Quang Tri province, Prime Minister Vo Van Kiet proposed the idea of establishing an administrative unit on Con Co island. Following that direction, at the end of 2002, 43 young people volunteered to build Con Co into "Youth Island", marking the beginning of the process of civilianization of Con Co island.
On October 1, 2004, the Government issued Decree 174/2004/ND-CP establishing Con Co island district. From here, the 10th administrative unit of Quang Tri province and the 12th island district in the country was established. The island district has promoted the heroic tradition, solidarity, overcome difficulties, and gradually achieved the goal of building Con Co into a tourist island "Stable in economy - Beautiful in culture - Strong in defense - security".

Con Co today has "changed its skin and flesh" with encouraging results. The economy has changed significantly, especially in the tourism service sector. Planning work has received due attention, the island district has completed the Land Use Planning for the period 2021 - 2030, integrated into the Provincial Master Plan to 2030 with a vision to 2050 and is currently implementing the Con Co Island District Regional Planning.
Emigration to the island and support for people to develop their livelihoods are focused on. In 2023, the average income per capita will reach 55 million VND/year. National defense and security are maintained.
After 20 years of construction, the first primary school class opened on the island in the 2023-2024 school year, fulfilling the people's wish to stay on the island and the sea.
Focus on developing marine economy
Speaking at the ceremony, Provincial Party Secretary and Head of the Provincial National Assembly Delegation Le Quang Tung congratulated and commended the great efforts and results that the Party Committee, army and people of Con Co island district have achieved throughout the journey of struggle, construction and development.

At the same time, it affirmed that the achievements over the past 20 years of the Party Committee, army and people of Con Co island district have made important contributions to the overall development of the province, creating very important premises for the island district to develop faster and more sustainably in the future.
It is recommended that in the coming time, Con Co island district do better in propaganda work and strongly launch the movement of the entire people to protect national security and protect national sea and island sovereignty.

The island district needs to closely follow the Provincial Planning approved by the Prime Minister to synchronously implement tasks, solutions, and development orientations, in which priority should be given to sustainable marine economic development with a focus on tourism development - services - aquaculture, exploitation and seafood processing.
Con Co Island is located in the dynamic tourism triangle of Cua Tung - Cua Viet - Con Co. Therefore, the island district needs to focus on exploiting its full potential and advantages, researching and developing many forms and tourism products, associated with protecting the sustainable ecological environment. Strengthening investment promotion and tourism promotion activities to turn the island district into a highlight of Quang Tri province's tourism.

Along with that, deploy solutions to stabilize the population and support livelihoods, creating conditions for people to feel secure in production. Focus on organizing to send more people to settle permanently. Focus on preparing to do well the work of organizing the 5th Party Congress of the island district, term 2025 - 2030.
On this occasion, the Party Committee, army and people of Con Co island district were honored to receive the Third Class Labor Medal from the President; the Provincial Party Committee, People's Council, People's Committee and Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of the province presented a banner with the words: "Solidarity - innovation - development, building a strong and comprehensive island district".

On the same morning, Con Co island district held the inauguration ceremony of the island district’s Traditional House. This is a place to store and display historical artifacts and pictures of Con Co through the periods of fighting, defending and building the island. The project was built with a total investment of nearly 12 billion VND from the district’s development investment capital.
