More than 40% of teachers have considered changing careers, the biggest pressure on teachers comes from parents

The 2024 Ho Chi Minh City National University-level science and technology project “Research on teachers' lives in Binh Thuan, Tay Ninh and Hau Giang provinces”, conducted by the Institute for Policy Development of Ho Chi Minh City National University (IDP-VNU), was just announced on the afternoon of November 18.

Teachers face a lot of pressure, more than 40% have considered changing careers

IDP-VNU conducted a large-scale survey of 12,505 teachers in the three localities above in September and October 2024, and interviewed 132 education managers and teachers at all levels.

Interview and survey content related to teachers' income, life, spirit, career motivation and desire to improve policies.

Since the adjustment of the basic salary from 1.8 million VND to 2.34 million VND (effective from July 1, 2024), teachers' income has improved significantly.

However, survey results show that the income of the teaching profession only meets an average of 51.87% of the monthly spending needs of teachers' families for the group that does not have additional jobs.

Teachers with less than 10 years of experience assessed that their teaching income only met an average of 45.7% of their family's monthly spending needs.

The assessment of the level of financial pressure (income from teaching is not enough to cover living expenses) of teachers has a fairly high average score of 3.61/5 (5 is very stressful).

Of these, 44% of teachers said they were under some to very much pressure; only 19% of teachers said they were comfortable and very comfortable, with no financial pressure.

In addition to financial pressure, teachers also face pressure from professional activities such as preparing lectures, department meetings, other administrative and social tasks; pressure related to regulations on teacher standards, attitudes towards students, etc.

Notably, up to 70.21% of teachers said they were under pressure or very pressured by students' parents. 40.63% of teachers had considered changing careers due to mental violence from parents.

71.83% of teachers are overloaded with work

The survey results also showed that 71.83% of teachers were overloaded with work, while the rate among preschool teachers was 87.65%.

Nearly 70% of preschool teachers do not have time for physical education and recreational activities, and 46% of teachers at other levels spend less than 10% of their day on these activities.

The time teachers spend on family care accounts for only 15.81% of their time. In particular, for preschool teachers, this figure is only about 1/3 of the average.

Although their income still does not meet their living needs and they face a lot of pressure at work, 94.23% of teachers said they continue to pursue their career because they love their job and their students.

Most teachers are overloaded with work and have little time for rest and recreation.

More than 63% of teachers want to teach extra lessons to increase their income.

25.4% of teachers surveyed said they taught extra classes in school and 8.2% taught extra classes outside of school. Extra classes mainly focused on subjects such as math, literature, English, physics, and chemistry.

Teachers' extra teaching time also increases gradually according to the levels of education: primary school 8.6 hours/week, secondary school 13.75 hours/week and high school 14.91 hours/week.

Extra teaching at school is mainly tutoring, extra classes, and graduation exam review activities with the agreement of the school and parents. Extra teaching at the center is usually a group of teachers in charge of foreign languages.

Although home tutoring is still banned, teachers are still teaching in person or online.

63.57% of teachers expressed their desire to legalize extra teaching, including tutoring at home and online tutoring, to increase income from their own abilities.

Want to improve teacher policy

Proposal to establish a national financial support fund for young teachers

From the results of practical research, Ho Chi Minh City National University hopes that the agencies drafting the Law on Teachers will pay attention to and focus on a number of issues.

Ho Chi Minh City National University proposes to increase the working age for teachers with qualifications from PhD, associate professor, professor

Firstly , salary and allowance policy for teachers: basic salary according to the teacher salary table is ranked highest in the administrative career salary scale system (as proposed in the draft Law on Teachers).

This is a breakthrough regulation, contributing to increasing income for teachers, especially young teachers and preschool teachers, to feel secure in their work and contribute to education.

Second , it is necessary to create a solid and comprehensive legal corridor to protect teachers from pressure and protect the image of teachers in the new context.

Reduce the retirement age for preschool teachers; at the same time, extend the working age for teachers with doctoral degrees, associate professors, and professors.

Third , regarding regulations on extra teaching and learning, it is necessary to build a clear legal corridor and a transparent mechanism for extra teaching; ensuring harmony with teachers' salary policies.

Fourth , build a reward and treatment policy worthy of teachers' contributions.

At the same time, it is recommended that the Government consider issuing preferential financial policies (bank loans with preferential interest rates based on seniority or commitment to the number of years of work for young teachers).

Establish a national financial support fund for young teachers, teachers of special subjects, talented teachers, and teachers in special areas.
