More than 2,400 students came to the Foreign Language Secondary School, Hanoi National University, to compete for a place in grade 6, on the morning of May 28.
This year, the school is recruiting 150 students, so the competition ratio is 1/16.2, meaning that for every 16 students who take the exam, one will be admitted.
Since 7am, parents have been taking their children to two testing locations on the campus of Hanoi National University on Xuan Thuy Street, Cau Giay District. After their children entered the testing room, parents stood and sat scattered throughout the campus waiting and chatting. The rain last night made the air this morning cool.
Ms. Dang Thi Duyen and her son came to Hanoi from Vinh Phuc the day before to go to the exam site this morning. Ms. Duyen said that her son was a bit nervous and urged her to go to the exam site early because she was afraid of traffic jams. Her son had already entered the exam room, but she still lingered in the yard to wait and see if he needed any help and to observe the atmosphere.
"It's really crowded. This year more than 2,000 people registered," Ms. Duyen shared.

This parent said she invested in her child learning English from a young age. When her child was in 4th grade, she found online English and Math classes from teachers in Hanoi for her child to practice. In the entrance exam, Ms. Duyen's child was placed ahead of her class, studying with her 5th grade brother and sister. Every time she took the school's questions, her child scored 7-8 points in English.
"There are many applications but the quota has increased compared to previous years, so I am hopeful," said Ms. Duyen, adding that after Foreign Language Secondary School, next week her child will continue to try his/her luck at Nguyen Tat Thanh Secondary and High School of Hanoi National University of Education.
Also having a child take the exam this morning, Ms. Hoang Thi Nguyet in Dong Anh district, Hanoi, was impatient, constantly looking at her watch and counting the time to start the exam.
"I know it's difficult, but I still want my child to try," Ms. Nguyet shared. She said her child likes learning English and proactively asked her parents to let her take the entrance exam to grade 6 at Ngoai Ngu Secondary School and Nguyen Tat Thanh Secondary and High School, both of which are different schools.
"Any educational environment is good, but my child wants to focus on foreign languages, so this is the right environment for him," said this mother.

Ms. Nguyen Huyen Trang, Principal of Foreign Language Secondary School, University of Foreign Languages, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, said that the school's quota this year increased by 50 compared to previous years. With more than 2,400 candidates taking the exam, the school mobilized more than 300 staff and students to support at two exam locations.
The Foreign Language Secondary School's competency assessment test consists of two parts: multiple choice (50 minutes) and essay (50 minutes). The multiple choice part includes Natural Sciences and Mathematics (10 points); Social Sciences and Vietnamese (10 points); English (20 points). The essay part includes Mathematics (10 points), Vietnamese (10 points) and English (20 points).
The test content belongs to the primary education program, mainly in the grade 5 program of the Ministry of Education and Training, ensuring four levels of cognition: recognition, understanding, low-level application and high-level application.
"With the orientation and as the name of the school suggests, the English test will have a higher weight," said Ms. Trang, adding that the ability test creates fairness for all candidates. The results will be announced on June 21.
