In the 2024 6th grade admission season of Foreign Language Secondary School (under the University of Foreign Languages, VNU), Phuong Ly impressed with a total score of 35.25/40, including 9.25 in Math; 7 in Vietnamese and 9.5 in English.
Not only did she pass the entrance exam, she also became valedictorian with a total score of 35.25/40 (double English), 9.25 points higher than the admission standard set by the school (the standard score of Foreign Language Secondary School this year is 26).
According to statistics, in 2024, 2,715 students registered to take the entrance exam for grade 6 at Foreign Language Secondary School. With a quota of 150, the competition ratio is 1/18, meaning that on average, for every 18 students taking the exam, only one student will be admitted.
Getting into a school with a high competition rate is already very difficult, Phuong Ly becoming valedictorian really makes many people admire. Phuong Ly shared that she was very happy when she received the news of being accepted, because this was the goal she set since she was in 4th grade.
Ms. Pham Thi Ngoc Huyen, Phuong Ly's mother, said she was happy and surprised with the results her child achieved.
“When I heard the news that I had been admitted, my child jumped for joy. Seeing that his test score was much higher than the standard score, I was very pleased. What I was most happy about was that he had demonstrated his abilities very well. When we received the results, both my child and I only knew the score but did not know that he was the valedictorian. For my family, passing the exam is important, and becoming the valedictorian is probably partly due to luck,” Ms. Huyen shared.
Ms. Huyen said she was somewhat surprised because she did not think her daughter could surpass many friends at famous schools throughout Hanoi.
To have today's results, the couple also had a preparation with a specific roadmap for their child.
Since the child finished the first semester of grade 4, the couple started taking the child to visit and experience some middle schools to see which school the child liked and was suitable for.
“My husband and I want our child to choose the school he likes. We took him to the school and asked to meet the teachers who had made an appointment in advance to ask for advice and share. He went and asked the teachers directly about what it was like to study at the school, what the environment was like, whether there was a lot of homework or not... After that, he expressed his interest and desire to get into the Foreign Language Secondary School.”
After her child made her choice, at the beginning of 5th grade, Ms. Huyen let her child take extra classes in Literature, Math and Foreign Language to improve her knowledge outside of the school curriculum.
Phuong Ly also stuck to her preference when she only registered for the Foreign Language Secondary School. “Our family also supported her in choosing this school because it was convenient for her father to go to work.”
Phuong Ly’s way of studying is not too special, but she focuses on listening to the teacher in class and completing all the assigned homework. “Only before the exam, did she practice doing many questions to get used to the type of questions the school asks every year,” Huyen said.
With primary school age students, Ms. Huyen said, her husband still has to remind Ly about studying, but not too stressful. "However, the Foreign Language Secondary School was chosen by her, the desire to enter the exam was also hers, so she is also very responsible.
Sometimes, I still have to remind my child to go to school. However, we always have a comfortable mindset that for a 5th grader, requiring autonomy in all activities is a bit high,” Ms. Huyen confided.
Phuong Ly especially likes science and science-related subjects. “I often learn through reading books, news or watching interesting exercises online in addition to studying in textbooks.”
Studying the Cambridge program at school, Phuong Ly's scores in most of her subjects were very good with a total score of over 95/100.
Phuong Ly has also won many awards. In grade 4, Phuong Ly won first prize at the national level in the Vietnamese Champion Contest. In grade 5, she won the national gold medal at the HIPPO 2024 International English Olympiad and second prize at the city level in the Vietnamese Champion Contest.
Talking about her daughter, Ms. Huyen said that Phuong Ly is quite independent, studious and often makes her own decisions. “My husband and I usually do not set goals for our child, but for Phuong Ly, the pressure she puts on herself is even higher. For example, she always wants and is determined to get high scores on tests, or to study well in class... or to pass the Foreign Language Secondary School Exam,” Ms. Huyen said.
In addition to stressful study hours, to relieve pressure, Phuong Ly has a hobby of reading books. “The books she reads cover many fields, but tend to be science books, both in Vietnamese and English,” said Ms. Huyen.
These days, Phuong Ly is experiencing her summer vacation at her grandmother's house. Ms. Huyen said that the family still has plans to take her on a summer trip regardless of whether she passes or not.
“Up until now, we have always determined that summer is a time for children to participate in other activities, not to study hard. Last year, even though we set a goal of studying for the entrance exam to Foreign Language Secondary School, our children only started studying at the beginning of the school year and the actual results were very positive,” said Ms. Huyen.
