On April 18, speaking with Thanh Nien reporter, Mr. NCL (parent of NMĐ, a student in class 1A4, Tran Hung Dao Primary School, Thai Binh City, Thai Binh Province), said that his child had been discharged from Thai Binh Children's Hospital and sent home for further monitoring.
Child D. was hospitalized with fever, stomachache, and vomiting.
However, until he was discharged from the hospital, his family still did not know why D. had a fever, stomachache, and vomited after eating lunch at school at noon on April 16.
Previously, at around 3:00 p.m. on April 16, Mr. L's family received information that their son, who was studying at school, had symptoms of headache, fever, and vomiting.
Mr. L. said: "From the time my child was brought home, D. vomited everything he ate, his body was tired, and he had a high fever. Too anxious, at 10 p.m. that same day, I took my child to Thai Binh City General Hospital for treatment."
According to Mr. L., his family registered for their children to eat at the school. At noon on April 16, the children's meals included tofu, pickled cucumber soup, and rice. After lunch and going to bed, during the afternoon class, Mr. L.'s children had a headache, cough, and high fever.
At the hospital, baby D. was given an X-ray and abdominal ultrasound but the cause could not be determined. On the morning of April 17, doctors performed blood tests but still could not determine the cause. The school also did not have any response regarding the preliminary cause of the incident.
"It's very strange that after nearly a day of my child being hospitalized, monitored, given IV fluids, and having many tests done, the doctors still couldn't determine the cause of the incident. The doctor only guessed that my child might have an intestinal infection. I asked what the cause of the infection was, and the doctor said we had to transfer him to a higher level to have a gastric fluid test done before we could make a conclusion," Mr. L. said impatiently.
Unable to wait any longer when D.'s symptoms did not improve, Mr. L. transferred his child to Thai Binh Children's Hospital. However, not long after, the doctor told him to take the child home for further monitoring. Up to now, D. still has a fever and has not been able to eat much.
Mr. L. also added: "Through discussions with parents, I learned that more than 10 students in other classes were also in the same condition and were taken to different medical facilities by their families. The unusual thing is that up to now, neither the school nor the hospital have been able to determine the cause of my son's condition," Mr. L. was upset.
On April 18, Thanh Nien Newspaper reporters contacted Ms. Ha Thi Lan, Principal of Tran Hung Dao Primary School, to update the situation, but Ms. Lan did not answer the phone. Previously, on the afternoon of April 17, talking to Thanh Nien reporters, Ms. Lan said that by the afternoon of April 17, the school had recorded 9 students in class 1A4 showing signs of headache, fever, stomachache, vomiting... including 1 student who was absent from school with similar symptoms.
"Immediately after receiving the information, I directed teachers to check whether parents let their children bring cakes and candies to school to eat? Did students buy cakes and candies outside of school? Or was it because of the school's food," said Ms. Lan.
According to Ms. Lan, the sample of the lunch on April 16 is still kept at the school. She is waiting for information from the teachers to provide the cause of the incident.
Ms. Lan said: "Currently, I only reported the incident to the Department of Education and Training of Thai Binh City and notified the parents, but have not sent food samples for testing. I will handle it internally first, monitor the students to see how it goes, and then send food samples for testing. If necessary, I will have the kitchen area inspected for hygiene."
According to Ms. Lan, it could be due to some recent epidemic that caused students to have such symptoms, because at school there are also some teachers with coughs and fevers.
Also yesterday afternoon (April 17), the reporter contacted the Director of Thai Binh City General Hospital. The hospital received the information and said it would provide more information later.
