Fulbright Scholarship Expands to More Fields for First Time in More Than 30 Years

The U.S. Mission to Vietnam has just announced the selection of candidates for the Fulbright Master's Scholarship program for the 2025-2026 academic year for Vietnamese citizens.

Accordingly, university graduates must have at least 2 years of work experience since graduating from university by the application deadline and have a minimum TOEFL iBT score of 79 or IELTS 6.5, or Duolingo 110, or TOEFL Essentials 8.5 (English test taken after April 1, 2022).

What is special is that starting from the 2025-2026 school year, in addition to the fields of social sciences and humanities and economics, the scope of Fulbright scholarships has expanded to most fields, including arts, biological sciences, engineering, physical sciences, medical and health sciences, architecture, telecommunications...

Specifically, the industry sectors are as follows:

Arts: arts management, film and television studies, music, theatre, drama, visual arts.

Biological sciences: agriculture, plant science, fisheries, biology, forestry, food science, natural resources, nutrition, oceanography...

Education: education, teaching English to speakers of other languages.

Engineering: aerospace engineering, agricultural/biosystems engineering, biomedical engineering, chemical engineering, civil and environmental engineering, electrical engineering, materials science and engineering, petroleum engineering...

Medical and health sciences: medicine, public health, veterinary medicine.

Humanities: art history/conservation/museology, history, linguistics, literature, philosophy, theology/religious studies.

Physical sciences: astronomy, chemistry, computer science, environmental and ecological sciences, geology, marine sciences, mathematics, physics, statistics.

Social sciences: anthropology, archaeology, area studies, clinical counseling psychology, criminology, demography, economics, geography, international relations, political science, psychology, sociology.

Business, law, public administration, architecture, communication, energy, information science, journalism, library, social work, telecommunications, translation and interpretation, transport, regional and urban planning.

For applicants majoring in engineering and physical sciences, the undergraduate major must correspond to or be related to the master's major.

Accordingly, the Fulbright scholarship does not require a minimum GPA to apply, however, applicants should carefully research the admission requirements of US universities to ensure they meet the requirements of the master's program of the field they wish to study.

What qualities and achievements should a candidate have?

To have a chance to receive a scholarship, the Fulbright Master Scholarship Program notes that applicants need to have excellent academic achievements and good English proficiency; demonstrate detailed and specific learning goals and demonstrate a clear connection between learning goals and future goals through convincing essays.

In addition, have extensive and diverse work experience in the intended field of study and have a good understanding of that field; demonstrate leadership potential through participation in academic, extracurricular, community, professional development and personal qualities activities.

Another highly valued factor is demonstrating dedication to Vietnam and the potential to create positive impacts upon return, contributing to promoting mutual understanding between the American and Vietnamese people, through educational and cultural exchange activities; and being willing to become a cultural ambassador of Vietnam.

Applicants submit an online application including 2 essays, 3 letters of recommendation, transcripts and diploma from university or higher, valid TOEFL/IELTS/TOEFL Essentials/Duolingo certificate, and work history.

Complete applications for the 2025-2026 Fulbright Master’s program must be submitted online at https://apply.iie.org/ffsp2025/ by 5:00 p.m., April 1, 2024 (Vietnam time). The fields of study can be found here.

The specific application process is as follows: in June-July 2024, the program will review applications and select candidates for interviews. In August 2024, interviews and selection of successful candidates will be conducted.

September-October 2024, candidates who pass the GRE/GMAT/TOEFL iBT/IELTS exam, November 2024-March 2025, apply to US universities, and by April-May 2025, there will be an official decision on the school the candidate will attend. In May or June 2025, the program will disseminate information before going to school to successful candidates, in June-July 2025, they will have a medical examination and US visa interview so that in July or August they will fly to the US to start studying the Fulbright Master's scholarship program.

According to the Ministry of Education and Training, since 1992, the Fulbright Scholarship Program has awarded scholarships to nearly 700 Vietnamese citizens to participate in master's degree programs at American universities. Scholarship recipients will receive full tuition, a monthly living allowance, health insurance throughout their studies, and round-trip airfare between Vietnam and the United States.
