Crown Prince Akishino expressed his joy to return to visit Vietnam, promoting the friendship that the two countries have cultivated for over 1,000 years.
"The Princess and I are extremely pleased to return to visit Vietnam on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries," Crown Prince Akishino said at the ceremony celebrating the 50th anniversary of the establishment of Vietnam-Japan diplomatic relations in Hanoi today.
Crown Prince Akishino expressed his deep gratitude for the warm welcome that Vietnam has given to Emperor Naruhito, Emperor Emeritus Akihito, Empress Emeritus Michiko, as well as Crown Prince Akishino and Princess Kiko during their visit to Vietnam.

The Crown Prince emphasized that the friendship between the two countries has been nurtured for more than 1,000 years, from trade activities and relationships that began in the 8th century. "Japan-Vietnam exchanges have developed steadily over the years, and cooperation has become increasingly deep and extensive in many diverse fields such as economy, agriculture, and environment," he said.
Crown Prince Akishino said he met with families of Japanese veterans who stayed in Vietnam after the end of World War II and joined the Viet Minh to fight against French colonialism.
"After Vietnam gained independence, these families experienced many difficulties because the veterans were advised to return to Japan. However, I was deeply moved to learn that the connection and exchange were still maintained between the families of Japanese veterans in Vietnam and their families after returning to Japan," Crown Prince Akishino added.
The Crown Prince expressed his hope that this visit will contribute to further strengthening mutual understanding and friendship between the people of the two countries.
Standing member of the Secretariat and Chairwoman of the Vietnam-Japan Friendship Parliamentarians' Group Truong Thi Mai emphasized that the two countries have joined hands to foster a friendly and cooperative relationship based on cultural similarities, strong historical ties and high political trust.
Ms. Truong Thi Mai believes that the two countries will "hand in hand" continue on the path to the future, cooperating more closely, cohesively and effectively.
