Support livelihood models for women in border areas from message 1400

In 2022, from the 1400 text message source sent to support the Program "Accompanying Women in Border Areas" Phase 2, Thanh Hoa province was awarded funding support to implement 2 livelihood models for poor women in border communes, including a cooperative group model (THT) raising native black pigs in Hau village, Tam Lu commune (Quan Son). The model has a total cost of 100 million VND, attracting 10 poor and near-poor member households to participate.

Support livelihood models for women in border areas from message 1400 Association officials visited the model of raising native black sows at Ms. Lo Thi Mien's household in Hau village, Tam Lu commune.

This model is directly implemented by the Provincial Women's Union and the Provincial Red Cross Society, aiming to connect, share experiences, monitor, and help each other to take care of the pig breeds to develop well; expand the pig herd and promote the advantages of the collective economy, creating opportunities to promote and consume local products. At the same time, it creates jobs, increases income, and stabilizes the lives of people in the border area with many difficulties. During the survey and implementation of the model, the units worked with the Party Committee and the authorities of Tam Lu commune to assess the potential, needs, and feasibility of the model for effective implementation. The Women's Union, the Red Cross Society, and the Farmers' Association of Tam Lu commune regularly coordinate to inspect, monitor, and urge members of the model to properly implement instructions, provide training, provide regular vaccinations, manage loans, and develop a plan to repay the loan amount periodically at 5 million VND/time/year, ensuring that after 2 years, households can repay all the initial loan capital to continue supporting other households participating in the model. Annually, a preliminary and final review of the model implementation is organized to promote good practices and overcome limitations and shortcomings.

Participating in the cooperative model of raising native black pigs in Hau village, households were initially given 6 sows and 44 piglets worth 100 million VND. After 1 year of implementation, the model has developed quite effectively from the initial 50 pigs to 159 pigs in total. Households have sold 139 pigs for meat. According to the assessment of traders and food users, the quality of native black pigs is fragrant, delicious, firm, lean and very popular with people, the market consumes quickly and stably. According to preliminary statistics of the cooperative model's Executive Board, the total amount of pork sold by households reached 333 million VND, after deducting expenses, 10 households earned a profit of 193 million VND. Up to now, households continue to maintain and develop more sows to 60 pigs to multiply the herd, expand the model to other households in the commune, helping more households have conditions to develop livestock farming and increase income.

Ms. Vi Thi Trong, President of the Women's Union of Quan Son district, shared: In order for the model to achieve sustainable effectiveness, the District Union has closely directed the grassroots union to grasp the thoughts, aspirations, and real needs of the members and the local reality to accurately advise on the contents that need to be implemented in the model. Along with that, the District Union and the Commune Women's Union staff regularly visit each household of the Cooperative to propagate to the households to know and understand the policies, plans, and orientations for effective model development. The "hand-holding" of the union for the households not only helps the households feel secure but also creates motivation and raises the awareness, self-awareness, and initiative of the households when participating in the model.

Ms. Lo Thi Du, Vice Chairman of Tam Lu Commune People's Committee added: The cooperative model of raising native black sows in Hau village has brought high economic efficiency and stable income. After more than 1 year of implementation, the cooperative has had 3/10 households escape poverty, contributing positively to the economic development and poverty reduction program, improving the quality of criteria for building a new rural commune. In particular, the model has created solidarity, mutual love, sharing difficulties with other women, attracting members to participate in the organization.
