Despite trying very hard, the Vietnamese women's team had to accept defeat with a score of 0-1 against the Uzbekistan women's team in the opening match of Group C in the second qualifying round of women's football for the 2024 Paris Olympics on the evening of October 26.
With this loss, the chance of coach Mai Duc Chung and his team to continue is almost gone because it will be very difficult for the Vietnamese women's team to compete for a wild card ticket for the second-place team with the best record (out of 3 groups).
Evaluating the match, coach Mai Duc Chung said: "I think the Vietnamese women's team deserved a draw rather than losing to Uzbekistan. Players Hai Yen and Bich Thuy missed a number of opportunities."
Explaining the loss of the Vietnamese women's team, coach Mai Duc Chung said: "It must be admitted that the Vietnamese women's team did not coordinate well. We have better strength than the host team Uzbekistan, the opposing team's players suffered from many cramps but the Vietnamese women's team could not take advantage of that.
In addition, the Vietnamese women's team has not yet taken advantage of the strength of low passes. Instead, the players play high balls, leading to losing the advantage to Uzbekistan, a team that has players with better height.
Coach Mai Duc Chung analyzed more about the loss of the Vietnamese women's team: "Uzbekistan did not play very well. They mainly played long balls and lacked protection, but the Vietnamese players were not ready for second balls and were slow to clear the ball. The situation that led to the loss came from such a scenario.
The Vietnamese women's team coordinated a lot on the two wings but did not pass the ball well. In midfield, the players did not compete fiercely and passed incorrectly. I think the players will have to practice more on ball contact and passing, so that they can be faster and more accurate."
The coach born in 1951 also complained about the refereeing: "The referees did not follow some situations closely. There were situations where the Vietnamese women's team should have been awarded a free kick but they were not."
Finally, coach Mai Duc Chung apologized for his team's loss: "I want to apologize for the result of today's match, this responsibility will belong to me, the head coach."
The next match, the Vietnamese women's team will meet the Indian women's team at 5:00 p.m. (Vietnam time) on October 29 at Lokomotiv Stadium (Tashkent, Uzbekistan).
