In September, China surpassed the US to become the largest customer of Vietnamese cashew nuts with an export value of 73.2 million USD, up 107.6% compared to September last year.
Since the beginning of the year, the Chinese market has recorded a growth rate of 42.3%, but Vietnam's cashew nut export turnover to this market has reached 433.8 million USD, second only to the US market.

Responding to VTC News on the morning of October 29 about this content, Mr. Tran Huu Hau, Deputy General Secretary of the Vietnam Cashew Association, said that in September, the output of cashews exported to China increased sharply, leading to an increase in Vietnam's cashew export orders to China since the beginning of this year.
According to Mr. Hau, the reason for the increase in cashew exports is not unusual, because China is a large consumer market for Vietnamese cashew nuts.
“The increase is due to the impact of COVID-19 in previous years, China implemented the Zero COVID policy so Vietnam's cashew nuts could not be exported. This year, when China returned to normal and exports resumed, exports also increased, there was no sudden increase,” said Mr. Hau.
According to Mr. Hau, China is the third largest cashew nut import market of Vietnam. The increase in cashew nut imports from China to Vietnam is completely normal, because China's demand for cashew nuts is very large.
“Chinese dishes go well with nuts and they use a lot of them. In the past, Chinese people often used nuts such as almonds, walnuts... but the price of these nuts was much higher than cashews. Therefore, cashews gradually became popular and increased in consumption in the Chinese market to be included in dishes,” said Mr. Hau.
Mr. Hau also said that China is currently strictly controlling food safety and hygiene issues, including food imports.
“Regarding food safety issues, China issued two orders related to imports and Vietnamese businesses have made great efforts to ensure the requirements of Chinese partners.
However, there are still some businesses, especially small businesses, that still do it the old way, that is, still produce manually, the conditions to ensure food hygiene and safety are not high, so they have to export through unofficial channels, which does not guarantee quality and value," said Mr. Hau.
According to Mr. Hau, the Chinese market was known as an easy-going market many years ago, so some small Vietnamese businesses processed cashew nuts with quality that did not meet the expectations of their partners. Therefore, they often sought to export through unofficial channels.

Recently, China has strengthened its control over food quality and safety as well as strictly handled the smuggling of food and agricultural products. Therefore, they have arrested and confiscated a large quantity of smuggled cashew nuts, which were actually imported through unofficial channels. Therefore, the unofficial export of cashew nuts from Vietnam to China is no longer suitable.
“Therefore, we recommend that businesses strictly implement production and processing to ensure food hygiene and safety according to partners' requirements, packaging, labeling, traceability, and export through official channels to ensure high value and avoid risks.
This is also a very positive thing, helping Vietnamese enterprises not only export to the Chinese market, but also export to many other markets around the world," said Mr. Hau.
According to statistics from the General Department of Customs, in September 2023, Vietnam exported about 56.8 thousand tons of cashew nuts, earning 310 million USD, a sharp increase of 47.6% in volume and 31.8% in value compared to September last year.
In the first 9 months of this year, our country's cashew nut exports reached 452,600 tons, worth 2.59 billion USD, up 18.8% in volume and 13.5% in value over the same period in 2022.
The average export price of cashew nuts reached 5,722 USD/ton, down 4.5% over the same period in 2022.
In the "billion-dollar export club" of the agricultural sector, cashew nuts are the item with the third highest growth rate, after vegetables and rice.
Regarding the market, in September, cashew nut exports to all traditional and potential markets increased sharply by 2-3 digits compared to September 2022.
According to cyclical factors, Vietnam's cashew nut export activities will be bustling in the last months of the year. The demand for cashew nuts for holidays and Tet will increase sharply. Cashew nut exports to the Chinese market recorded high growth rates, contributing to the overall export growth rate of this industry.
