Advice to help Da Lat fulfill UNESCO's creative city commitments

Experts and managers have had initiatives, suggestions, and solutions to help Da Lat city, Lam Dong province effectively implement commitments to join the UNESCO Creative Cities Network in the music field.

On February 22, the People's Committee of Da Lat city, Lam Dong province, organized a consultation seminar on "Implementing commitments to join the UNESCO Creative Cities Network in the field of music, period 2025-2027".

The seminar was attended by many delegates who are experts and managers working in the fields of culture and arts domestically and internationally.

Speaking at the opening of the seminar, Chairman of the Da Lat City People's Committee Dang Quang Tu informed that on October 31, 2023, Da Lat will be officially recognized as the next member of Vietnam to join the UNESCO Global Creative Cities Network in the field of music. This is a premise, effectively supporting the city in promoting cultural diplomacy, promoting the development of cultural industries with advantages associated with local tourism development.

Mr. Tu said that when Da Lat joined the UNESCO creative cities network, it contributed significantly to positioning the brand, promoting the image of the land and people of Da Lat to international friends; increasing opportunities for cooperation in all creative fields for the goal of sustainable development.

At the seminar, domestic and international experts, managers, and businesses with a passion for cooperation in developing culture and tourism presented initiatives, suggestions, directions, and solutions suitable to local characteristics to maintain and promote the title of Da Lat, UNESCO's creative city of music, such as promoting cooperation, technical expertise consulting, and connecting Da Lat with other creative cities in the network, to exchange good practices and promote common development; having a more vivid and scientific information and promotion strategy; forming a systematic music training and performance facility, creating a mechanism to encourage composition to produce top-notch musical works...

At the same time, continue to develop creative spaces and music performances to develop the cultural industry ; strengthen community and business connections to promote resources in implementing UNESCO's commitment to becoming a creative city of music...

Chief Representative of UNESCO Office in Vietnam Jonathan Wallace Baker said that Da Lat becoming a UNESCO Creative City of Music marks an important milestone for the city and Vietnam. This recognition is not only a compliment but also an opportunity, responsibility and commitment to promote creativity, strengthen cultural industries and ensure that music is a driving force for sustainable urban development.

The Head of the UNESCO Office in Vietnam hopes that the seminar will help Da Lat develop into a dynamic creative city, where music is the driving force of development.

“In the 2024-2027 period, Da Lat will begin to establish a roadmap to implement comprehensive and sustainable commitments. Da Lat needs to leverage creativity and music for urban and economic development; strengthen public-private partnerships to create a favorable environment for cultural industries; mobilize youth participation, apply digital transformation in music to innovate and move towards global reach…”, the Head of the UNESCO Office in Vietnam suggested.

Many opinions say that Da Lat city needs to build creative communities to mobilize the role of each citizen and artist; local initiatives need to have key international initiatives to strengthen relationships with members in the network.

In the period of 2025-2027, Da Lat city will continue to implement its commitments to join the UNESCO Creative Cities Network in the field of music. In particular, it will carry out regular activities to implement its membership tasks of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network; implement committed local initiatives, such as the musical heritage of the future; music training and linkage programs; build and strengthen the city's network of cultural and creative spaces and activities to encourage musical creativity.

At the same time, the city is implementing three international initiatives that it committed to when joining the UNESCO Creative Cities Network, including the Southeast Asian Gong Harmony Program, the Sound of the Great Forest, and the Lang Biang International Music Festival.
