US logistics company Pipedream is testing the world's first underground autonomous robot transport system in Peachtree Corners, which is expected to become one of the first smart cities in the US, Interesting Engineering reported on December 30. The project is being carried out in collaboration with Curiosity Lab.

Underground transportation systems are intended to address the emissions and congestion issues that are often the bane of today’s transportation infrastructure. According to Pipedream’s website, the system could transport consumer goods at extremely low costs, with fewer emissions and less congestion.

Pipedream’s system consists of several components. First is the cargo container, designed to fit 95% of the consumer goods typically ordered for delivery today. Next is the portal – a temperature-controlled, above-ground interface that handles orders weighing up to 18 kg. The system also includes an autonomous electric robot that can reach speeds of 64 km/h, ensuring fast and efficient deliveries. Below ground is a network of pipes with intersections designed to allow the robot to easily turn 90 degrees, increasing the robot’s flexibility and navigation ability.

Pipedream’s Peachtree Corners system spans nearly a mile, connecting a bustling shopping center to Curiosity Lab’s 2,500-square-foot innovation center. Using the system, Curiosity Lab members can order food from a variety of restaurants as well as other items. The service operates Monday through Friday, especially during peak lunch hours. After taking orders, Pipedream robots drive through the tunnel, autonomously delivering items like groceries and household items.

With the US expected to spend 40% of its traffic on deliveries by 2030, Pipedream’s goal is to divert that traffic underground with innovative solutions. Pipedream says its automated, fast delivery system helps restaurants, grocery stores, and other retailers increase capacity and revenue.
