Recently, when asked whether two players Hendrio Araujo and Jason Quang Vinh Pendant have a chance to be called up to the Vietnam national team, coach Kim Sang-sik had a clear answer.
He shared his opinion: "If they have nationality, I would really like to call them up. However, to wear the Vietnamese national team jersey, Quang Vinh and Hendrio must be worthy, must truly show love, dedication, and be willing to sacrifice for the team. If they can do it, I am willing to give them the opportunity."
On his personal page, the player who is currently playing for Nam Dinh team also expressed his desire to contribute to Vietnamese football as a Vietnamese player. Hendrio is undergoing naturalization procedures. Vietnamese audiences are very happy with this news because Hendrio is a player with very good skills. Many fans also advised him to take the Vietnamese name Hen Araujo. As in the case of his teammate Rafaealson, when he was naturalized, he changed his name to Xuan Son. Good luck to Son. Vietnamese football has both luck and son!
When will Hendrio have enough time to become naturalized?
Coach Vu Hong Viet of Nam Dinh Football Club revealed that it will be 2026 before the team's Brazilian midfielder Hendrio has lived in Vietnam for 5 years continuously. At that time, this player will be considered for naturalization and will be considered a domestic player (if the naturalization is successful) to play on Vietnamese football fields.
The effect of Nguyen Xuan Son at the AFF Cup 2024 has created positive thoughts from fans about using naturalized players in the national team. However, finding naturalized players who both meet the criteria of good skills (outstanding compared to domestic players), have enough seniority in Vietnam according to FIFA regulations (minimum 5 years of continuous residence), and are of the right age (not too old), is not an easy task.
The proof is that the Vietnamese team had to search for many years to find a face that is completely suitable like Nguyen Xuan Son at the AFF Cup. Hendrio is another case that is being considered. However, the main members of the national team must still rely on domestic players trained by Vietnamese football.
For example, currently, Xuan Son is suffering from a long-term injury, and Hendrio will not be eligible to play for the Vietnamese national team until at least 2026, if he is naturalized. Therefore, during this period, the Vietnamese national team still has to compete in important international tournaments, especially the third qualifying round of the 2027 Asian Cup, with a force consisting of purely domestic players.
This is an issue that VFF has also considered. VFF Vice President of Professional Affairs Tran Anh Tu previously said: "Using naturalized players is only a temporary solution. In the long term, Vietnamese football must still develop based on the source of young players trained by ourselves. The stories of the current Indonesian teams, or Singapore in the past, are valuable lessons. When naturalized players withdraw, they leave large gaps for the above teams."
The Vietnamese team certainly wants to develop sustainably, progressing step by step steadily but in the long term, so we will still put our trust in players who have been trained by domestic clubs since childhood, such as Tien Linh, Quang Hai, Hoang Duc, Thanh Chung... and the young generation of Hai Long, Vi Hao, goalkeeper Tran Trung Kien... These factors will be the main actors for the Vietnamese team's 2027 Asian Cup qualifying campaign and further, the 2030 World Cup qualifying campaign.
