The names Ba Son and Thu Thiem were given to two bridges over the Saigon River connecting the city center with Thu Thiem Urban Area, on the morning of June 14.
Thu Thiem 2 Bridge connects Ton Duc Thang Street (District 1) to the new urban area named Ba Son. This is a symbolic project of Ho Chi Minh City, inaugurated in April last year with a total investment of nearly 3,100 billion VND - the largest cost among bridges in the city to date. The bridge is nearly 1.5 km long, has 6 lanes, and is designed with a cable-stayed structure with the main tower leaning towards Thu Thiem, creating a prominent architectural highlight on the Saigon River.

Thu Thiem 1 Bridge connects Ngo Tat To and Nguyen Huu Canh streets (Binh Thanh District) to Nguyen Co Thach street in Thu Thiem Urban Area, and was renamed Thu Thiem. This project has been put into operation since 2008 with a length of more than 1.2 km, 6 lanes, and a total investment of more than 1,000 billion VND.
The new names of the two bridges were approved by the Ho Chi Minh City People's Council in December last year. According to the Department of Culture and Sports, Thu Thiem is a name that appeared in the 18th century, and now this place belongs to Thu Duc City. Thu was a guard post under feudalism and also referred to the head of an organization or administrative unit. Perhaps the commander of the guard post was named Them, so people often called it Thu Thiem.

Ba Son was named in 1790 when Lord Nguyen Anh set up a naval camp and built a "marine workshop" on the banks of the Saigon River. Ba Son is considered the cradle of the Vietnamese shipbuilding and repair industry. This place became an important part in the history of the struggle for national independence of Saigon - Ho Chi Minh City, closely associated with the life of President Ton Duc Thang.
Vice Chairman of the City People's Committee Duong Anh Duc said that using these names for the two bridges has the meaning of educating historical traditions, creating attraction for investment so that the city can soon complete the goal of building the Thu Thiem New Urban Area. Relevant units need to do a good job of maintenance so that the two works become the highlight of the city's urban landscape.

According to the plan, there are 4 bridges and a tunnel connecting Thu Thiem New Urban Area with the city center. In addition to Thu Thiem and Ba Son bridges, the tunnel across the Saigon River on the East-West Highway connecting District 1 with this urban area was put into operation 12 years ago. The remaining two bridges, Thu Thiem 3 (connecting District 4) and Thu Thiem 4 (connecting District 7), have not yet been invested in.
