UEFA voted Erling Haaland's volley against his former team Dortmund as the best goal of the 2022-2023 Champions League season.
According to UEFA's announcement on June 11, Haaland's goal received the most points in the Technical Council's vote.
Haaland scored in the Man City - Dortmund match in the group stage on September 14, 2022. After a cross from Joao Cancelo in the 84th minute, the 22-year-old striker jumped up and finished with the outside of his left foot, sealing a 2-1 victory. Before that, in the 56th minute, Jude Bellingham opened the scoring for Dortmund, while John Stones scored a long-range equalizer for Man City in the 80th minute.
Haaland is one of three Man City players to make the list of the 10 best goals of the 2022-2023 Champions League season. Kevin De Bruyne's low shot against Real in the first leg of the semi-final is seventh, while Rodri's curling effort against Bayern in the first leg of the quarter-final is 10th.
On June 10, Man City ended a very successful season with a 1-0 victory over Inter in the final, thanks to the only goal by Rodri in the 68th minute. This season, Man City also won the Premier League and FA Cup, becoming the eighth team in Europe to win the treble, after Celtic, Ajax, PSV, Man Utd, Barca, Inter and Bayern.
Haaland personally won the Champions League Golden Boot. He leads the scoring list with 12 goals, four more than the second-placed player, Mohamed Salah. Previously, Haaland also won the Premier League Golden Boot and the European Golden Shoe with 36 goals.
According to experts, Haaland is a strong candidate for the 2023 Ballon d'Or. His biggest competitor is Lionel Messi, the 2022 World Cup champion. France Football magazine will organize a vote with the participation of journalists around the world. The award ceremony will take place on October 30 in Paris. In 2022, the Ballon d'Or belongs to Karim Benzema.
