The Western Nghe An Biosphere Reserve was recognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) on September 18, 2007. This is the largest terrestrial world biosphere reserve in Vietnam with a total area of nearly 1.3 million hectares, within the administrative boundaries of 9 districts in Western Nghe An including: Thanh Chuong, Anh Son, Con Cuong, Tuong Duong, Ky Son, Tan Ky, Que Phong, Quy Chau, Quy Hop.

The Western Nghe An Biosphere Reserve is currently facing difficulties in management. It is necessary to have a unified management plan framework, in accordance with current legal regulations and local practical conditions, so that the Management Board of the Western Nghe An Biosphere Reserve can operate effectively.
The workshop contributed ideas to develop a plan for environmental management and protection of the Western Nghe An Biosphere Reserve, aiming to build and perfect the organization and operation mechanism and improve management capacity; strengthen the role of the Western Nghe An Biosphere Reserve in leading the connection of stakeholders, in implementing environmental management and protection activities.

Build, implement and replicate models of exploitation and rational use of natural resources, combining socio-economic development with biodiversity conservation, environmental protection and climate change response. Attract investment, build models of nature-friendly tourism development combined with conservation of cultural values, biodiversity and development of local specialties, OCOP products, and instructions associated with the brand of the Western Biosphere Reserve...

At the workshop, delegates proposed solutions such as: There should be a coordination mechanism between local authorities and Pu Mat National Park and Nature Reserves, so that the management and protection of the Western Biosphere Reserve can be more effective. Quickly complete the institutions, organizational and operational mechanisms and improve management capacity. Strengthen cooperation, mobilize resources and apply technology to effectively build and implement environmental protection and biodiversity conservation projects in the Western Nghe An Biosphere Reserve.
Speaking at the workshop, Mr. Nguyen Danh Hung - Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development acknowledged the opinions of the delegates and requested relevant units to complete the Draft on the Management and Environmental Protection Plan for the Western Nghe An Biosphere Reserve, to submit to the Department of Nature Conservation and Biodiversity - Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, Nghe An Provincial People's Committee in order to promptly approve and put into operation from the period of 2024 -2027.
