According to "Tien Giang Gazetteer", Tan Hiep Mound relic (located in Ca hamlet, Tan Hiep town, now in the working area of Chau Thanh District Party Committee, Tien Giang province) has an area of 4,157 m2 , located in a plot of land of 9,895 m2 , the top of the mound is about 4.5 m higher than the ground.
This is an architectural relic with the largest scale in Tien Giang.
Tan Hiep Mound is currently located in Ca Hamlet, Tan Hiep Town, Chau Thanh District, Tien Giang Province. According to the assessment of archaeological scientists, Tan Hiep Mound could be a large-scale religious center of the Phu Nam period, belonging to the Oc Eo culture lineage.
Chairman of the Provincial Historical Science Association Le Ai Siem said: This is a quite unique relic in terms of architecture, shape and scale.
However, there are not many documents about this relic. Between 1988 and 1995, Tien Giang Museum invited some scientists from the Southern Institute of Social Sciences (Ho Chi Minh City) to survey Tan Hiep mound. Then, Dr. NIXI, a Japanese, came to survey and research this mound.
According to the assessment of Dr. NIXI and some scientists, through the remaining traces at Tan Hiep mound and some neighboring areas, it shows that this could be a large-scale religious center of the Phu Nam period.
According to a professional survey by the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Tien Giang, the relics surveyed at Tan Hiep mound belong to the Oc Eo cultural lineage, which developed more than 1,000 years ago, due to natural factors, the land formed, the time period of the mound's construction is unknown.
This artificial mound is covered with square bricks and is about 4 m high.
The floor bricks have the same size as the bricks at Go Thanh relic (Cho Gao district).
Previously, in this area there was a large rock about 1.5 m wide lying outside the old brick wall. On the mound, the architecture had collapsed.
During the American invasion, military facilities were built here. Now the brick walls have no trace left.
Through the survey, it can be assumed that the relic is a central architectural structure related to religion in the late Oc Eo period (7th - 13th century).
According to the book "History of the Party Committee and People of Tan Hiep Town", regarding Tan Hiep mound, many local people said that according to the ancestors, when the village was established, the area behind the mound was still deserted, so it was called Forest mound.
In front of Tan Hiep Hill, from the East to the West, there are two very large oil trees, commonly called the twin oil trees, behind Ba Pagoda. On this high hill, there is an abandoned pagoda, which residents call Dang Tho Pagoda.
Later, the French built a school on the hill, called Tan Hiep Primary School (first 3 years of primary school). When building the school, they dug up statues on the hill. In 1995, Tan Hiep mound was recognized as a provincial historical and cultural relic.
Because it was formed a long time ago, belongs to a very famous cultural line, and represents the typical characteristics of Southern culture from ancient times, on December 15, 2000, the Provincial People's Committee issued Decision 09 on the protection of historical - cultural relics and scenic spots, deciding to protect many relics in the province, including Tan Hiep mound.
"We highly value the historical and cultural values left behind and have taken many concrete actions, such as searching for and discovering many historical relics and traces to research, preserve, and propagate to the younger generation. However, today, many cultural values are gradually fading away. Economic losses can be compensated or restored, but the loss of cultural resources is an irreparable and irreparable loss. Therefore, I really hope that the younger generation will consider preserving and promoting cultural and historical values as their responsibility, to pass on to their younger generations the good cultural values of the nation...", Chairman of the Provincial Historical Science Association Le Ai Siem shared.
